when could I say I actually "play" an instrument? how will I know if I'm good? surely you can't just buy an instrument (ex:a month ago, but practice almost every day and have a few basics "down") and then if someone asks you if you play anything you mention said instrument? I have about 6 or 7 instruments that I play for fun but I don't say anything when someone asks when will I know im ready? master the fundamentals??

but when you say you "play" an instrument you set off some sort of exemplary representation that you are good at said instrument. then comes word of mouth, assumptions, you are terrible, preconceived notions of said "musician", without you even saying a word. accruing opinion/you are judged(i could care less BUT), drama ensues and then you have to deal w/ bullshit(i am provoked easily and retaliate poorly and get into arguments rather suddenly). so i do take the question as "how technically proficient are you at 'said' instrument" because that is what i interpret the other person is asking(and kids at my school think this as well). also by your logic if i buy an oboe, approximately 24hrs later i could say I'm an oboe player??? i didn't mean to sound so vulgar in my previous post. i might as well not even mention i play any instruments/produce

I play the technics.

My english teacher gave me a weird look when I mentioned that as the musical instrument I played. Like the wtf stare. I had to give her the 'wiki wiki' dj motion to confirm what i meant.

I really think you're overthinking it. If I weren't very good at 'said' instrument, I'd make it clear in my response. "Oh sure I play the macbook pro, but I've only been doing so for a few months"

If crazy rumors and drama emerges from a comment of that level of inane-ness, then you're talking to the wrong people. Though it sounds like you're in high school, so not too surprising.

I play the recorder. Been an absolute don on this bad boy since year R.

If you're able to pick an instrument up and have a good, musical* time with it; you play it.

I play the drums, whenever i mention this people ALWAYS ask "are you any good?" to which i have to reply "well i've being playing since i was 8 and that was 14 years ago..." because if i was just to reply "yes, yes i am very fucking good" it would sound big headed and arrogant (though it is true)

Honestly it's probably just if you can then pick up a guitar (or whatever) and play something when somebody asks you. Maybe that again comes down to how much of a twat you are though.

Yeah i feel the same way about guitar. I just kinda feel like a dick when some kids going on about how hard sweeping is, and i'm like "Try playing some Necrophagist to warm up next time." Being completely serious and they think i'm joking. Fucking n00bs and them not being the shit at the instument they picked. Haha.
And on topic, i think you can play an instument when you can play something that sounds good and makes you feel accomplished.

havn't listen coz im at work, but surely the definition to being able to play guitar is being able to paly 'smoke on the water'

I'm sure some people can play an instrument for 14 years and still be shit though.

I think a "Yeah, yeah actually, I'm not bad, I play in a band, come see me play" wouldn't be big headed. Plus brings more people to the gigs.
