Illegitimate Children is a musical experiment started by Derek Janni, a real-life math nerd and electronic music producer whose taste for weirdness has garnered him respect in a crowded and often homogenous scene. His music cannot be easily pigeonholed: taking sounds from electronic music's past and warping them into a new framework, his music is both future-oriented and nostalgic at the same time. Constantly morphing rhythms propel his tracks and blasts of 80's synthesizers, droning space sounds and reverberating vocals add layers of unique weirdness to them.
As a classically-trained a music student and self-taught drum machine maniac, his productions balance the knowledge of a band geek with the sensibility of a hip-hop beat maker; combining creative chord progressions with bombasts of crunk beats, mid 90's R&B samples and woozy synths he creates music that is both technical, yet with pop sensibility and goofiness that defies the possibility of ever being called "pretentious". If there is one thing to always expect from Illegitimate Children it's change: his music never treads the same path twice and each song is a new mix of future thought and familiar foundations that defies the label-readiness we've all come to expect from electronic music.
