How do make that distinct sound like in Brown and Gammons song?
Soundcloud (@:56)
Its sounds very formant, how do you get that kind of sound?

If you use massive then just make a 1 oscillator annoying overused high pitched formant saw wobble that is so "cool" right now, and then resample the hell out of it, so low end comes from resampling, should come out gritty as here, and from shit sound u get good sound xD

But seriously, if anyone could re-create the bass sound they use in dying, I'd love them. I feel like it's super simple, and I'm just missing some basic fucking option or something.

mess with different formants, bit of portamento and layer it over a square / sine and have some fun resampling to get the sound a bit more warmer. Tbh that sound is quite annoying.

What exactly are formants in massive? Just like, 6+ octaves up, or some other leet shit? I know if you mess with the intesity it changes the sound, but is that it?

I was talking about op's question. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formant. There's not "leet shit", there's knowlodge, it's not a massive thing, it's a synth thing You can either work with a spectrum wave or the formant in massive, just change it in the oscillator settings.

Thanks for the link, i'll check it when i get home(at school). I was just confused as to what the theory is behind it, as i looked in the massive manual, and it threw a bunch of jargon at me that i don't get (yet). And i know it's a synth thing and not just on massive

Doesn't sound like a formant to me, though I'm only familiar with massive and gladiators formants. Sounds more like a math osc with some phasing and a saw or square underneath it or something (i'd create separate patches for each). Add some unison, a tiny bit of chorus, bandpass or daft filter with some resonance to get rid of some unwanted frequencies and to add some nice tones, classic tube it (or brauner have a listen), then resample with a fair amount of distortion, a bit more chorus and whatever you damn feel like. May not be a math oscilator, so experiment with a couple others if that doesn't give you a nice sound, maybe a scrapyard osc with a phased saw would be better

gawd :3
Well what I mean, try this, starrt with a simple moog'ish sound, not really a wub, but it needs be like a gritty fat little sound, that goes maybe woooum, then you do however you want, but make it, into a freaking heavy synth, like really growling, a tip, distortion, vocoders just learnt a new way to make synths, not gonna tell my entire secret but yeah, if you get it right, just add those same fx, to a high pitched synth, and you should keep the high parts, but also low growls should join the synth, if not, just layer 2, also you can chop that up for some badass high pitched sounds
