Does anyone else's copy of "Kindred EP" sound awful?
Does anyone else's copy of "Kindred EP" sound awful?
I finally sat down to listen to this last night, i didnt listen to any snippits of the tunes or anything i wanted to hear them fresh from the vinyl.
When i put the record on i noticed it was very crakley, i know Burial likes to use crackles on his tracks as lots of artists have done but this was not it. The more i listened i noticed that everyone now and then a loud crakle would appear, best way to describe it would be almost like distortion.
The vinyl is also very muffled and low. I thought it might have just been me so i put on my vinyl copy of "Street Halo EP" and i had to turn the volume way down, it was far crisper and clearer.
Does it sound like a got a bad copy? Im fuckin rageing ive been looking forward to listeneing to this for ages.
I bought it from Bleep.

Re: Does anyone else's copy of "Kindred EP" sound awful?
Im pretty sure it's supposed to have them big crackly pops.Go check it out on youtube and see if its in the same spots
Re: Does anyone else's copy of "Kindred EP" sound awful?
Yeah, im not bothered about crackles, i know its supposed to sound like that, but compared to other vinyls its very muffled sounding and i have to turn the volume a good bit up to hear it properly.
Yeah i was gonna check youtube alright see if that was the same, ill have a listen later, cheers.

Re: Does anyone else's copy of "Kindred EP" sound awful?
Could be to do with how much longer the kindred ep is in length. About half an hour of music fitting onto the same size plate as the 20mins of street halo. Narrower grooves etc. I think the muffled sound is definitely intentional, as of course are the crackles and pops. As long as you can turn it up enough on your mixer it should all be fine! Mine sounds fine anyway.

I am not too sure what to think about Kindred too...I think it sounds terrible.
Re: Does anyone else's copy of "Kindred EP" sound awful?
I don't have the vinyl, but I assume it's cut at 33rpm. Combine this with the existing crackles/distortion in the production itself + 15 mins/side means that volume and quality is sacrificed heavily, especially for dancefloor-style records.
Burial on vinyl is pretty much a recipe for disaster it seems. Stick with digital, it's how it's produced + meant to be heard afterall.

Re: Does anyone else's copy of "Kindred EP" sound awful?
I actually found a hair on my record (my girlfriend is shedding again) with a load of fluff so i dusted off the record and played it again.
It seems to sound better, but bear in mind it was 1.00am last night when i was listening to it after working 15 hours so i was wreaked, and the sound quality on the vinyl definitly isnt the best. I understand the pops and crackles and muffled sound creates a mood, but it doesnt sound very clear. Im all for atmosphere and that, but i just wish it was clearer.
I had a listen on youtube as advised and it does wound pretty much like the vinyl now, so i guess there is nothing wrong with my vinyl.
Great fuckin EP though.

Guys ithink theres somethin wrong with my vinyl.
It seems like i randomly hear a girls voice come in and i csn hardly make out what shes saying.
It seems to be randomly in each track.
There are also these random quick loud noises, as if someone is hitting a drum or something. It happens pretty frequently and it just seems to go on and on.
Anyone else have this problem

Jon AD Doubt it. Transition is pretty hit or miss, and I'll bet they did the digital mastering on that release at the same time as the lacquer cut. Plus, you really have to start lowering the overall range of the cut for anything with a program over 11-13 minutes. It will be really bad for the side with 18 minutes on it.

Jon AD I hope I'm wrong. Someone like burial's music needs a good amount of separation in the mixdown to cut right and not lose some atmosphere. If the mix was different for vinyl, it could still very likely be way better.
I just wish the release didn't push so many towards digital due to cost and timing.

Jon AD As long as artists and labels make it cost consistant for those who want records, and don't make it less appealing, people will buy records. $14.98 wouldn't be bad for a 12" if it came with a dl code containing the ep plus a bonus track, at the least. All you have to do is care about those who are interested in your art, put it together correctly, and show respect for them by giving them more.

Jon AD @chris: that isn't neccesarily a good thing. A price like that, for a 12" which does not cost more than any other 12" production wise tends to make people become disenfranchised with your art. People can smell a cash grab.
Kinda makes that one well reported tweet all the more funny. The one that said something like "new burial 12". Definitely less than 30 quid".
I'm thinking of selling this record in my shop and giving anyone who buys it $5 off a LoDubs item, just to make it sting a little less....

Chris **** sure, agreed that it's an overpriced 12" but that doesn't mean that because Burial's 12" was overpriced that people will stop buying vinyl. They're just more likely to stop buying overpriced Burial vinyl.

Jon AD Yeah, but across the board, when a release is like this, it might be the gateway release that makes someone quit buying records and just focus on digital. I do see people switch format allegiances like that, and that effects all those who make records.

Re: Does anyone else's copy of "Kindred EP" sound awful?
every single Burial release on vinyl gets complaints. you can go back and look over 6 years of threads about it on this site, starting with his first EP's. everyone says the same thing, that the highs are too crackly, and the bass isn't there.
6 years of releases can't all have mastering & pressing problems. thats just impossible. i think many of you are missing the point that Burial has said many times in interviews that the crackle is for atmosphere in the tracks. its there for a reason, and seeing that most of the early burial releases were mastered at Transition in London, I highly doubt that they would get things wrong, over and over again.

If banksy printed up, 100 ltd edition t-shirts, and charged £150 for each one, someone out there would buy it. trust. Banksy's still got a large collectors audience, that pays top dollar for all his output. the point being that Burial & Hyperdub are forcing no one to buy their music, but its bought, and bought worldwide. the "cash grab" you speak about would be relevant if they sold less and less Burial, but thats just not what's happening. its the reverse.jon ad wrote:

I guess it only matters how well Banksy and Burial do, eh? I was talking about the market in general. Read the rest of the thread, it is stated there.seckle wrote:If banksy printed up, 100 ltd edition t-shirts, and charged £150 for each one, someone out there would buy it. trust. And as for the "Cash Grab" line, anyone who has been working with vinyl could tell you that this release shouldn't have been all squeezed on one 12", or you will get diminished fidelity and more crackle. I say it should have been on a double pack, maybe with a blank side if necessary, thus standing consistant with the list price. Since it is not, I must insist it is likely they made such decisions based on bottom line above quality.
Re: Does anyone else's copy of "Kindred EP" sound awful?
Yeah i get that, and i love the atmosphere on the on his tracks, the crackling is essential to Burial tracks but i had no problem with the "Ghost Hardware" or "Street Halo" vinyl, i just dont think this sounds as good.seckle wrote:every single Burial release on vinyl gets complaints. you can go back and look over 6 years of threads about it on this site, starting with his first EP's. everyone says the same thing, that the highs are too crackly, and the bass isn't there.

But listening to it now and knowing that i dont mind it, its still a fantastic release, "Ashtray wrap" is unbelievable.

Burial's Kindred EP will be the first vinyl that I ever buy (just got my uncle's old record player). And I'll be buying it from Anthem (which is run by Jon AD, I believe)

As for the crackle aspect of a long program length, reproducing some aspect of the aesthetic of this release is the only reason I can see for such a long program length, and knowing the label owner, I would say that is a distinct possibility:
