Should we enforce the How To Make This Sound Thread?

Seeing as half the posts on the first page alone are sound design queries, would it be beneficial to start actively enforcing the sound design thread again? This can be done a number of ways;

1) Merging all sound design threads into a monthly "Make This Sound" thread. Would mean the "Make This Sound" thread would get a bit cluttered, but seeing as it's only monthly rotation it shouldn't become too cramped.

2) Locking all sound design thread and posting a link to the "Make This Sound" thread. Would mean there was a lot more locking, but that locked threads could easily be identified, and conversations could be continued in the main "Make This Sound" thread if required.

3) Leaving as it is now, with sound design threads all over the place.

Haha no for real I don't mind the clutter and I think we should make people aware of the thread and give them the option, but not be too uptight and enforce too strongly.

Just my opinion.

Say number two and possible make it a sticky... In the last 3 days there's been like 5 threads trying to start new sound design threads because they are too lazy to use the search. And if people don't wanna follow the rules I don't think any advice should be given... It seems as if there's two camps : the people who direct to the help tread and people who just post how to make the sound even though the op isn't following the rules either way there needs to be one response that everyone agrees on or else people will get confused about whether it not the thread is enforced at all

Merging would be best if a mod would edit the post to clarify it was merged. I've been confused quite a few times on merged posts appearing in threads. Otherwise, as long as the pld link forwards to the post in the thread that was merged, all should be fine. Unless it's unique or in depth enough to warrant an entire thread on its own, the monthly thread idea seemed to be best as kept it looking tidy.

The issue with merging is that say you have a thread that already has a few responses to it, not all of those responses will have quoted the OP. As such, merging in such a manner would mean that any unquoted responses would be hard to marry up with the original question, or else a mod would have to edit ALL responses to the thread with the OP prior to merging.

I'm for lock & redirect. Merging is, as Wub said, quite confusing and I have doubt it will work out well. Imo it's best to lock & redirect, just like with the WIP feedback thread. Make the "Make This Sound" a sticky so it's easier to spot. The feedback thread works pretty good, there is only an occoasional thread about feedback here.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I think it would be beneficial to make a sticky, because sometimes those threads also go dead. Also (maybe it's been done), but maybe we could have the first part of that page should be links to all the other "help me make that sound threads", that way we can avoid the clutter and still do it monthly, but the new heads have easy access to previous threads.
As for me, when I see somebody come up with one of those threads, usually I direct them to the proper thread, but if I think I know how to make that sound, then why wouldn't I just answer it right there? IT just seems kind of pointless for me when there's already a thread up to say "meet me in the other thread and I'll tell you there".

I agree with redirecting and making the thread a sticky. It could be a great tool, but it's not far enough up for a fair number of people to see it most of the time. :/

Ok, so thoughts so far;

1) Lock the threads

2) Put a redirect to the How To Make This Sound thread something like;
Please redirect your comment to the How To Make This Sound thread here - then give the link
3) Make the How To Make This Sound thread sticky

4) For each new How To Make This Sound thread, have the OP containing a list of all previous threads to ease of navigation.

Sound good?

Ok...I'll give this thread until Friday to run, so that we've got a broad cross section of timezones commenting, then implement it moving forward from next week.

I just think the biggest thing is across the board cooperation so that one person isnt saying go to this thread and another saying pressing this button and turn this knob

I think regardless of what approach we take as a community, we need to create an environment which is conducive for learning. Otherwise, we're undermining the whole point of a production forum. The rules should always be enforced; however, I believe the rules can be enforced without antagonizing, alienating or otherwise ostracizing an individual for not knowing. We, as a community, should encourage people to post more actively, think critically, and learn (actually learn). I understand that some of us joined these forums while trolling and negative behavior was widely accepted, but I feel these practices contributed to a hostile environment where members such as myself LURKED for years to avoid being flamed for asking a "stupid" question. A more active and knowledgeable community is nearly always a more fulfilling, enriched community. Come on, guys? Where is the love?

I really don't like merged threads. How does a merged thread even work, when you have several different questions asking different things. At least with single threads, i can clearly see the questions and only answer the ones i want to.

I also don't really care about forum 'clutter'. Does it affect my life in any way? No. Finding threads i'm talking in isn't a problem, and finding threads i'm interested in reading isn't a problem.

And personally, i like to see sound design threads. Its a big part of producing, and if anything i'd like to see more of them. Threads like 'what pc for dubstep' or 'what synth is best' seem to crop up a lot and there isn't a sticky for them.

Agree with all of this. I like reading sound design threads as long as they don't cover the generic bass questions covered many times before/stickied at the top of the page

Right? I lurked for a while too :w: . I think what ruins it is people like in this thread.
http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=238341
People who don't want to learn and they just want to know what x makes me do y thing? It gets annoying.
But i want to learn and help, and I'm sure countless others are here for that exact reason. Hopefully redirecting people across the board will help get rid of the more commonly "annoying" questions about sound design. Not to mention, having an extremely active sound design topic would be phenomenal. And if everyone agrees on keeping the sound design talk in there (unless it warrants it's on thread ), that's exactly what the thread would become. :)

to be honest, people who post in the 'how to make this sound' thread are less likely to get an answer than they are if they post a straight up question in the production subforum.
i think a lot of peoples questions get overlooked in there because obviously alot of people are all posting different questions.
dont know whether anyone else agrees with my opinion but they're just my thoughts on the matter :)
