"Hank Shocklee is an icon. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know who he is or never heard of the Bomb Squad. When you can say you were Chuck D’s mentor you are an icon. When your production credits run from Public Enemy’s“It Takes a Nation of Millions” to Ice Cube’s “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” to Slick Rick’s “Great Adventures” to RUN-DMC’s “Down with the King”…you are an icon. His fingerprints are on half the significant hip-hop records in the late 80’s and early 90’s, and Hank Shocklee is nowhere near done. The man has an opinion on everything and isn’t afraid to share it, including what makes a great artist, the future of the music industry and why dubstep is speaking to him right now."

CE: So, who out there has Hank Shocklee excited right now? Who’s music are you vibrating with? If you were to go out and give a big cosign to one artist who would it be, like we are playing pickup basketball, who do you pick first?

HS: Oh shit…that’s rough because…okay, you really want to know? You really want to know? I would go pick up DMZ, I would go and fuck with [dubstep collective] Digital Mysticz and the reason why I say that is I think that there is a vibration that they got that the world needs to feel. And what it is, it’s weird, it’s not a person, it’s not an artist…it’s different, it’s almost a being in their sound.

seriously, one of the most inspired people i've ever had the pleasure to talk to.
you're talking to someone that took part in changing the face of hip hop. when "it takes a nation of millions" dropped, that album raised the production bar sky high. the whole hip hop industry was never the same. when he was at dmz vs dubwar here in nyc, he had an airhorn can, and was onstage with all of us.

legend!

it's kinda bananas here in NYC. you see a dude in his 40s holdin' up the wall and realize it's hank shocklee... next thing you know you're having a 30 minute conversation w/ him, not cuz you're just talking about how awesome PE/Bomb Squad was but because Shock is one mad inspired, and interested, dude.

He's out ALL THE TIME these days at dubstep gigs, Dub War, SubSwara... a tremendous inspiration for all the times that you think music's in a rut. Dude has done far more than his share to shape modern music and he's still out looking for things to feed him something new. prrrrrrrrrops to that!

What really pisses me off is that PUBLIC ENEMY have been written out of music history. They are barly considered a foot note. In actual fact they are one of the most important bands of the 20th century. And they should be given the fucking respect that they have earned.

Oh and let me add. They are the most important pollitical band in the histoty of music. Having said that, Richard Strauss (1864-1949) was a little pollitical but, for all the wrong reasons.

'THE COUNTER ARRACK ON WORLD SUPREMACY'
PUBLIC ENEMY 1990.

Easy now, there's plenty of people recognising PE. A couple years ago it was impossible to buy MOJO Magazine without Chuck being in some article or PE showing up in a "Best Ever" list.
