i need to get me some new breaks, drum hits and what not, any recomendations? iv done a bit of daptone records stuff and sampled a few old jungle tracks. i thought it would be benifitial for inexperienced others like me to have a thread in this realm... sampling off vynil, what to look for in a label, genre etc.

I just get my breaks and samples from sample packs or from free sound project. I dont rip instruments/synths from other peoples tracks but if i did i wouldnt say what i had used online for copyright reasons really

• Listen to as much various from as many different genres/artists/labels as possible
• Go digging, buy blind, listen to stuff you wouldn't usually.
• Do some educated research - if the drums on an obscure 60s funk record are sick, find out who the drummer is and see whatever records they've worked on.
• keep a notepad next to you at all times to make notes of what sounds good at what point in what track.
• Consider installing Audacity so you can sample direct from any sound that is playing on your machine via the Stereo Mix drop down
• Internet radio is a fucking great source of weird sounds these days, plus you can get stuff from all over the world.
• Come up with a structured filing system for your samples, whatever works for you, so you can find stuff again you've grabbed it.
• Avoid sampling from the genre you're trying to make. It won't sound as good as when the artists originally did it, and you'll be musically inbreeding your tunes.
• Charity shops are a great place for obscure shit. If I see a record by a band I don't recognise, and there are eight of them on the cover, half black and half white, standing in front of a spaceship, I'm buying the record.
• Similarly, anything with 'Space' of 'Africa' in the title will get bought. Except for Toto.
• For eBay, if you want a random bag of inspiration go to [preferred medium], and set your search parameters via the Advanced menu as such - Ends within 1hr, No bids, free P&P/shipping, maximum bid £0.99/$0.99. Buy the first five things you see come up and try to make a tune out of them when they arrive.

thanks for tips, about the sample packs i find the breaks have been processed already takes the fun out. i found one yesterday by bad medicine the track was trespasser, working on it now.

this. great for picking up old skool singles and stuff

some pound shops sell albums as well so might be worth a look in there

Funny, but seriously though... you can get big sounding one-shot samples from Toto records if you chop them up nicely.

When i first got my vinyl decks from hard to find about 5 years ago, i brought like 100 vinyls and they all turned out to be shit tunes but
this thread has got me inspired to go digging for samples in them

I know for a fact this record is in there

The subsurface breaks pack has loads to mess around with, has been
my essential source for drums over the years...

Some good tips here, Sampling is definitely one of my weaker points. Thanks for the advice!

I once used paulstretch to slow footcrab down 700 times, and used that for atmosphere. Sounded sick.

you can record the audio signal from your computer, cut up samples precisely cos you can zoom in really far other than i dunno

Sort of like soundforge but free?

So anyways if I want to sample an old DVD, I could play it on my computer and just start recording that into Audacity?

or you could rip it and convert with format factory. soooooo easy and no additional noise from recording.
