Just a couple newbie questions.

1) what is a beatdown section. I heard it in Dubba Jonny's song. I know that album was released as a joke, i realize i cant take it literally. But it is a part of dubstep, and i cant seem to find what it is. 2) I have Dubturbo 2, and I know it cannot make dubstep. However, I could still get my money back. I just downloaded the FL Studio 10 demo, and i might purchase the Software. Assuming i did, should i keep Dubturbo to make simple beats in, and then import into FL Studio, or just make the beat and everything in FL? Also keep in mind, I have neither the funds to purchase a Midi board, nor the want to purchase one this early in my adventures into dubstep. 3) What is the best program for begginers. I know this is discussed in many other threads, but the discussion always seems to veer in the direction of what DAW is better at what and why. I mean that for someone literally just starting out, what would be the easiest to learn on? Edit: 4) Am i basically screwed if i have absolutely zero music theory knowledge?

Every DAW is the same. Studio One, Logic, Pro Tools, FL, Ableton, Reason, Bitwigs (?), Acid, what really weights is your knowlodge and musicianship. Check out Korg's Nanokey, extreme cheap midi controllers. Also medidate more over the genre, it goes way deeper than Dubba Jonny and his horrible song that I regret searching after reading this

They all take time to master, there's always a learning curve. Ableton has operator, logic has an awesome sampler, studio one has killer editing, you should try every demo you can and then decide / watch a few classes on Youtube.

Get Reaper. The "demo" is unlimited and fully functional. I've used it for about a year, all you get is a little nag screen at the beginning. Funny thing is, in my opinion it's actually better than big buck DAWs. I used to use Cubase, and Reason before that, reason feels like a toy, Cubase I struggled with, I also tried the demo of FL studio, i didn't like that either. Reaper on the other hand is fucking amazing. the workflow is light speed if you set it up right and its got everything you could want, well, minus a low level audio editor, but for that get audacity and you can set reaper up to open audio in audacity with a simple click (or whatever you want).

Also find out where you can pick up regular copies of Computer Music Magazine (or subscribe). The cover DVD on there basically has all you need to start off your IDM endeavours and the tutorials each month are usually top notch.

Don't worry about a MIDI keyboard just yet as reaper has an inbuilt 'keyboard' of sorts that you play with your actual keyboard. I personally have an Oxygen 25 so I've not used the inbuilt Keyboard, but I know it's there.

Stick around and dig as deeply into as much information as you can muster. There's a lot you have to learn, you really will not understand the true reality of that point just yet. The most important thing you need to understand at this point is that it's going to take you a long time before you begin making stuff you're happy with, I honestly don't know a subject as complex as computer music creation, the more you get to know about the spectrum of deep and intermingling subjects involved in this the more you will come to understand that point. As a computer musician you take on the role of composer, performer, synthesist, Sound designer, audio engineer, Mixing Engineer and Mastering Engineer. That's a crap ton of stuff right there. But it's doable. So stick with it, we all start somewhere, it's hard work but when things start paying off the rewards outweigh the investment tenfold.

I'd say FL Studio 10, Ableton Live 8, Cubase 6, Or Logic Pro. Ableton, Cubase, And Logic are pretty similar. FL Studio is a bit different but I think it has the best piano roll, easiest to make drums in/melodies in.

They are all going to be hard to learn...it's just going to be easier when you're already used to it...so I'd say get Ableton Live or Cubase...it's what every big producer is using or has switched to...

FL Studio is only on Windows, it has a Mac version but I think it's a bit behind from what I know, Logic Pro is only on Mac.

Ableton Live 8 + Cubase 6 are on both Windows & Mac. Easier for collaborations etc.

...It's the fight against apathy that tires me out every time I come on this forum...FFS...

1.Spend time with each DAW and figure out for yourself which is better. No one DAW is more suitable for beginners than any other. Although, I say that reason is geared towards more of those who've worked with hardware/ are familiar with hardware. It's what you see when you hit the 'tab' key that freaks me the fuck out Lol...
2. Get rid of Dubturbo. Seriously. The software is geared toward shortcuts and at the end of the day, it's a gimped piece of software....Garage Band works better than that shit.
3.DO NOT start another thread on this forum until you have done a moderate amount of searching/research. I can tell you that not every one of these threads turns into an argument of which is better...And even if that was the case, you're still getting invaluable feedback/features on DAWs...just got maintain an objective filter when reading posts.

Food for thought for ANY beginner on ANY topic: I can almost guarantee you that your question has been asked before. I can almost guarantee that there is an answer for any question you might have. If you REALLY are passionate about producing music, come to grips NOW that time and effort are you greatest weapons in learning. I believe Camel Audio also offers some VERY good free VSTs, you don't HAVE to steal, man. Heck there's thousands of grood freeware VSTs out there. Go get em.
