Melodic Intro

Post by Canonmusic » Sat Mar 31, 2012 12:33 am

Anyone have ideas on how producers have these really melodic intro's and then the drop fits with intro? I don't know how to really explain it but like the relationship between the intro synths and the bass sounds I guess.

I find that a bit psychological. Usually, it's the last bars of the build up before the drop that make that feeling. Otherwise, you can use similar notes or add a bit of the intro synths to the drop. Works for me.

Yeah that's a good point.. Usually it goes intro then like breakdown to the build-up. So definitely the last few bars are what you need to "fit" right

I don't think it has so much to do with the synths themselves meshing together, honestly. Of course, they do need to fit, but there are other reasons. I think a lot of it is bringing back tiny bits of the melody as fills between basses, and keeping the same sort of atmosphere in the background.

I forgot another way, kinda more obvious. Do the opposite, play some basses on the build up. Kill The Noise does this all the time for example.

It's all about cohesion, as the others have said either tease your basses in the intro or slot in your melodies after the drop in between phrases of bass.

I started producing electronic music not too long ago, but it's somehow the same as in other genres. Knowing a little about music theory helps you a lot. On my last project, I started writing by choosing 4 chords and arranging them the way I wanted them to sound like, wrote my baseline based on those chords, splitted this pattern up and placed it to my different basesounds, which I created before I started writing. Same goes for the intro, the leadsynth etc. Everything is base on those 4 chords. As someone else mentioned I like placing some of your synth sounds from the intro(buildup) during the drop inbetween your baselines.
