Are you fucking serious with this guy?

Listen to that fluttering WIDE bass. You'll know what it is the SECOND you hear it.

I understand a big part as to why it sounds SOOOOO wide is the contrast between it and the rest of the mix. It's the widest thing.

But I want to know what kind of automation that is...

I've tried reverse engineering based by ear, but it's rough, man. I'm new to dubstep(producing it for a year) and it's just not possible for me to figure this out without some help.

As a matter of fact, all of his basses sound so different and yet they fit, every time. It's genius. Especially at his age(17, when he made this) and it just makes me feel SO behind.
Any of his gritty/shreddy basses, I can do. That's easy. And that's how I've been learning as quickly as I can, by trying to figure out other basses and making them. But this one has me stumped.

Any idea?

TBH that track has zero dynamics, it's just too loud, don't take it as a good mix / master. For wide basses, you can treat it like a guitar and copy it panning 100% OR you can, after all the resampling is done, split it in frequency bands. Widen the mid and highs by duplicating and panning or with stereo spreading fxs. Just avoid phasing and you are good.

Thanks, man! Yeah, I used to record metal/hardcore and I tried doing that and it sounded garbage, so I scrapped it but I probably did it with a less-than-desirable bass for the example.

And I like loud, I like big and aggro. Always have. So when considering what a good mix/master is, it tends to be the flavor that people like. Also, regarding freq splitting/tracking... which is better to avoid phasing issues?

Doing that or multibanding? Because I've been trying my hand at C4/C6 but it messes with the sound in a way that I'm not really happy with.

I always multiband my reeses and spread the shit out of them with ozone, but I guess in that case he just splited the bands, kept the low and the sub in middle and duplicated the mid range.

I guess with a reece bass it wouldn't matter a whole lot if you multiband vs. multitrack the freqs. Reece's can't sound much more messed up. What I wanna know, now is how did he get the texture for it. It ALMOST sounds just like white noise/pink noise with some distortion. But I tried and it doesn't quite do the trick...

have you tried decimation and or bitcrushing?

kind of sounds like the scream filter in massive as well.

Also, I've just opened a project and started making some interesting wobbles and freq splitting. I'm doing this from now on. It's a lot of work but boy does it pay off in a BIG sound

COME ON!

As far as I've seen from some of his livestreams, he uses Massive as his main synth. So that's a start. I don't ever remember seeing him resample, but that could be because I was watching at the wrong times. Maybe the Dimension Expander in Massive could help?

You use Ableton, too. So what do you mean? It's overcompressed?

Because I do not notice what you're referring to. But it's probably just because I don't have your ears. Enlighten me, bro!

And I think he uses TONS of automation. I just think he does it tastefully and works hard at it so he can repeat the same part over and over, changing only the rhythm... and it never gets old.

EDIT: Rando, I love the blast beat bass in your song, btw. Good job incorporating some of that world into your music I'm working on adding some stuff like that into mine, streamlined. You did it well!
