Underdogin it... ProTools user here...
So I'm still really learning effects, I have limited plugins and am self taught. I say underdog because I know ProTools LE 8 isn't exactly ideal. But I love Rusko's sound and I think I can be different! Just wondering if anyone had in depth ideas for ProTools users and some failsafe basics (besides LPF automation). Thanks!

Re: Underdogin it... ProTools user here...
To be completely honest, I don't think anyone here even uses protools, but most of the advice should translate roughly to whatever daw you're using anyway so just start reading your ass off...I know it's probably not the answer you were looking for.
Re: Underdogin it... ProTools user here...
For plugins for Pro Tools just make sure that instead of getting VST's you get RTAS plugins instead. A quick google search for free RTAS plugins should bring a few up.
It is the industry standard for music production. Although it might not be the most commonly used for bedroom producers due to the cost and the fact that you cant pirate the software the same principles you apply using other software are used with Pro Tools.
Make use of the elastic audio settings for stretching loops and vocals they are really useful. Also check the digidesign forums there are some really good, helpful posts on there.
Some tips that have really helped my workflow are - Create a template that you use every time you start a tune, have an eq and a compressor on every channel, with a reverb bus set up with a reverb sound you like. This means you can start making a tune straight away every time you start instead of creating tracks and effects etc.
Just create a new session, call it 'Session Starter'. Then create the template you want. Save it.
Now create a new session and choose the option ' Create from session data' and choose the 'session starter' file. This will mean your new session uses the exact same template every time.

Re: Underdogin it... ProTools user here...
There are a couple of ProTools users on here that I know of, can't remember who off the top of my head though...but I know someone has it mentioned in their signature.
Re: Underdogin it... ProTools user here...
I have used pro tools for a fair amount in the studio! I wouldn't use it on a personal level above my main DAW's though, I'd like to know as of why you chose pro tools for your personal electronic productions? Just out of interest

Re: Underdogin it... ProTools user here...
I'm a Bro Tools user as well. I've been using it for about eight years (self taught) so I guess I don't know what I'm missing with other DAW's. PT seems to do everything that I need it to so while I'm being battered with other "amazing" options here on DSF I'm content for now. My workflow seems to be a decent pace.
For electronic music, I set up in grid editing (use slip if you need to do something out of the grid barriers). Obviously, the grid is set by the tempo that you've created.
The D-verb plugin takes massive amounts of cpu to process so I would wait to run the plugin or do a one-time application to a piece of audio via the audiosuite menu. I would save the original audio in the same channel by just having a raw copy further down the timeline.
Midi automations would be my weakness in speedy workflow though I've found a way to overcome NOT being able to do it. I end up drawing it with the pencil which actually yields some interesting results that I might not have done while automating live.
I have an mBox Pro 2 interface that's pretty fresh. I just found out that Logic is compatible with it...

I tried ableton, fl, and reason and I didn't like the workflow that much.
I don't produce to make money or release albums and all I do it for fun and for a hobby so I find that the slow relaxed workflow that I've experienced with pro tools is perfect for me.
Download demos of other daws and try them out though! Trial and error
DON'T LET ANYBODY TELL YOU THAT YOU NEED ABLETON TO DJ... I hate that shit.
Dont get me wrong I've djed with it before and it was fun but it's not a necessity like some people seem to think

Well that comment came out of leftfield. Of the DAWs out there isn't Ableton the only one properly setup for DJing?Mammoth wrote:DON'T LET ANYBODY TELL YOU THAT YOU NEED ABLETON TO DJ... I hate that shit.

As others (including Mammoth) have said, ProTools strength is the ease with which you can edit audio. It's MIDI capabilities have come a long way in recent years.
Is ProTools quite CPU heavy for those who don't use an HD setup?
Re: Underdogin it... ProTools user here...
Find a DAW that fits your workflow.
I've went through many DAW's..
Started with FL STudio, thought it was the fucking best.. then moved to Reason 5.. hated it, props to Reason users.
Now I'm a big Ableton Suite user.. love Ableton.. workflow is perfect.. MIDI mapping/editing is easy.. Automations are right in front of me.. the native plugins are beautiful.. can't say much more about ProTools, my mates (Poseidon Dubstep) are major ProTools users.

Doing an Ableton set isn't really DJ'ing anyway is it... it syncs to time so it's not as if you have to beatmatch or anything.Mammoth wrote:I tried ableton, fl, and reason and I didn't like the workflow that much.

Re: Underdogin it... ProTools user here...
Ive seen threads on here and on DOA with people asking "im about to dj my first night do I need ableton?"
That's all.
Im more into audio than midi but I think that pro tools has very similar midi features as logic anyways

Re: Underdogin it... ProTools user here...
LilWUB... How would you run that through the audiosuite like you mentioned? Thanks for all the awesome feedback so far guys! My one true downfall is no keyboard or midi station I do everything by clickity clickity on the mouse... Kills my flow... I'll post my newest zombie themed piece on soundcloud/fbook for feedback this week after I get a chance. Thanks again!

Select the audio you want to process and go to the audiosuite menu at the top and choose the plugin you want and use the preview button until everything sounds good.Rockedoutguitarist wrote:LilWUB... This is also how you reverse, normalize, and all that good stuff to an audio clip
