Australia or England for music career?

Post by samdam1 » Sat Apr 14, 2012 3:34 pm

So I live in Australia, I'm 17, I'm also an English citizen and have a British passport and all that jazz, as that's where my parents were born.
I'm interested in going to college and getting a degree in audio engineering / production.
Would it be better for me to go college in Australia or England?
and after that, would it be better to live in Australia or England to pursue a career in this industry?
please explain why in all of your answers! Thank-you :)

You can make it anywhere if you're good enough but tbh I wouldn't recommend having a degree in it unless you want to work for a biggish company but even then if you get a decent portfolio they won't turn you down for lack of one.

My advice: study something technical that audio engineering relies on, like electronics. You can learn everything else in your spare time

i cant tell you if one countries better than the other and its evident that you can make it regardless of where you are in the world these days ( thanks to the internet making the world smaller ) but in 1998 i came back to england from australia to do exaclty what youre thinking of doing.... back then the UK had more opportunities education wise no doubt. i imagine its levelled out by now.

with that said,

if you wanna travel and get experience in a world outside what you know, go to england.

if youre happy where youre at and you have an understanding family, a solid crew & are generaly surrounded by decent folk, i'd say stay where you are ( for now ) because what you have is maybe all you need to help achieve and support the early stages of what youre aiming for.

if youre not set and feel theres more out there, go look and see what you can find.

without sounding cheesy but it is and its true, follow what your gut is telling you. this is all regardless of you wanting to make it the music game. having that is good though, its something solid and positive to have as a focus point and a meaning to your choices and the thing is, where ever you base yourself you'll more than likely want go on tour to the other place anyway ( if of course you make it or reach the goals you set out for yourself )

anything is possible if you believe in yourself even if you end up doing something completely different to what you set out to do. anythings better than getting lost in the system and going through life comfortably numb and not taking any chances, so go live life wherever it is you choose to do it :)

I reckon it would depend on what you want to do and what area you want to go into. If you want to make it big in DJing England would probably be better.

With the internet you can be anywhere with a connection though, you're probably best trying to do it freelance in oz first since you won't be fucked if it doesn't work.

Unless you want to work with strictly analogue stuff, which is no bad thing (in fact, it's probably better), then you shuold consider where you can get all the equipment and a base to rent/buy with enough local talent to keep the dubs coming...
