Massive v.s Operator & Analog (ableton)

Post by Ohyra » Fri May 04, 2012 9:17 am

So yeah, a couple of months ago i made the leap and started using ableton. I fucking love it, suits me perfectly. So for the most part i've been using Massive to make wobbles and whatnot and i know how to make most stuff in it: robotic yoi, skrillex style shit, womps etc etc, but recently i wanted some change and i decided to do a song with only stuff that came with ableton...And my god Operator and Analog kicks massives ass! (imo)

I never liked the envelopes in massive, i always thought they were kinda random and not on the spot. Automating the lfo is a bitch, the waveforms get kinda tired and boring after a while. I mean, it has some good things, great filters, cool modulation possibilities and a nice, easy interface but operator and Analog is so easy to use, have great sound and filters. If you check my tune in the sig, that reeseey wobble is ALL analog!

I may be wrong but im under the impression that those synths are kinda overlooked in regards to "the mighty massive". So im going to delve deeper into these two synths and push them to the limit! So my question(s) are: Which is better, Massive or Analog/operator, Do you have any great tips for A/O, and what's the WORST thing about Massive?

Peace

its true that other synths out there can no doubt sound amazing, however its down to the person tweak the synths. its definitely possible to tweak massive in a way without it having that generic massive sound. i see what your sayin about massive being overrated but personally i still like massive a lot since theres infinite possibilities + its quicker to modulate parameters than most other synths.

i cant understand FM, it all seems so random. Dont get me wrong i can occasionally make a nice bass in operator but its by accident. Love anologue though, just wish it was more affordable

Oh deff, massive has great modulation possibilities and it's super easy to make great patches! I've just come to realize that i prefer abletons synths. The fm part of Operator aint that hard actually, just tweak around with it and learn by doing!

I couldn't agree more. I don't actually use massive though have played around with the demo and whatnot. I've found it's possible to apply exactly the same fundamentals to any synth capable of creating similar waveforms and adding different types of FX chains afterwards.

In my opinion it doesn't matter which synth you're using, as long as you understand the fundamental process of using certain types of synthesis to create certain timbres. For example, any synth capable of FM, no matter how 'basic' relativistically compared to massive or FM8 e.t.c. can create the same basic 'raw' waveforms that produce any degree of gritty/glassy/metalic resonant waveforms. Then it's simply a matter of applying things like EQ resonant peak/notch automation between sweet spots of the timbres pitch register, splitting the freqs and adding subtle chorus/reverb/distortion e.t.c..

The only thing that's ever truly important is the physical waveform you're creating and the physical processes you're putting it through, what you use to do that doesn't matter as long as it's actually doing the same broad type of stuff.

I've made sounds that you couldn't tell apart from massive or FM8 e.t.c. by using a collection of free synths and plugins. My only problem is finding the kind of music those timbres would suit is pretty alien to my workflow lol. But for principles sake I know at least it's doable.

So the lesson would be really. Don't follow the hype, learn the underlying science of it and you've suddenly got 10 fold differnt ways of getting there.

I couldn't agree more! Now fm8 is the new flavour of the week i guess, cuz skrillex said he use it, and every kid into production just pirated it. It kinda makes me cringe.

I have been using the abletons stock effects and instruments for about a year now. I still have not come close to all the possibilities this program has. I feel like people should really learn one instrument/vst/effect very well before moving on to different flavors of the same effect/instrument/vst.

If you are just starting to use operator, using something as massive as...... Massive or Gladiator your not going to have a clue what your doing.

Get the basics and move from there.
