Random question for people who Order Vinyl Online

Post by twistedspirit » Thu Mar 30, 2006 8:36 pm

Hi all, this is pretty random, but I've never ordered records before and I was wondering if someone could tell me how they are packaged for shipping.

Say I ordered like 15 records from Boomkat, will they put them in the same package or do they come individually packed up? Would I get a giant box or something?

I've never really DJ'ed much, but I have a pair of some hand-me-down ancient crappy Gemini's already sitting around my house doing nothing. Figured I might start up my dubstep collection with a bang and order a whole bunch of stuff at once, but I'd have to get it shipped to my lame office so I was just curious about what I can expect to come and how much the mailroom people will be pissed and all that.

Thanks!

Wow, a dull question! I can answer this!

It'll probably be a few vinyal mailers, with 4-5 pieces in each, all taped together into one big parcel of vinyl joy.

Sorted.

If what you're asking is "will they be safe?" then yes, especially with Boomkat. I've never had any problems, and I haven't set foot in a record store for a year.

You'll probably get one big box :) Boomkat pack their records pretty well, so they should be in good condition on arrival.

Some places are really sloppy about packaging and all the sleeves get bent etc... from experience, Chemical are the worst culprits.

Redeye and Boomkat get nothing but praise from me though, even though Boomkat might take a bit longer to send out the package than most.

Really? Boomkat are next-day with me. They obviously like me then. I'm their Boombitch.

Wow, thanks for this quick response.... very dull question indeed, haha!

Yeah, I was not too worried about their safety (although that is good to know), as much as wondering if my prick company will give me a hassle for ordering a bunch of stuff or something... probably a bit paranoid, but they've been hassling us here at the corporation for the stupidest stuff lately :x

Thanks again!

So you guys would basically recommend Boomkat and RedEye primarily then? I heard Juno is alright too?

juno is good too. and so is bm-soho (blackmarket). redeye is my favourite right now though.

one thing - i'm not sure but ordering a bunch at once might increase your chances of getting dinged for duty. i had to pay when i got a proper box of vinyl delivered recently. with mailers i've only paid duty once, and that one was sent by courier. i think with the smaller packages they might be more willing to believe that it's a 'gift.'

Juno are fuckin pricey on the p+p front, but they deliver the goods before you know it. They employ a team of ninjas, get it to your door doublequick.

I've been ordering from Juno and BMSoho for over 6 years. Try and do some pricing on bulk orders (more than 4 plates at a time), because you'll find that with recorded overseas delivery, there's a price advantage to ordering more than two 12"s per order. if you order less than two, then you're really throwing your money away because the recorded delivery is based on weight up to a set point.

The packaging is a fairly standard cardboard mailer with carboard inserts. In six years of orders( two orders a month) i've had about 3 shipments destroyed/warped/mangled...and one order even had boot footprints on it!!! That said, 90% your orders will get to ny just fine.

Thanks for the heads up, I will try to look into this. Never thought about that...

Good point, I'll definately do some more research. Just wanted to get some impressions from people who know what's up already. Cheers!

ez man
boomkat is cool. on the one time i did have some damage, they reimbursed me. i usually order from redeye and rooted. both are cool & friendly. redeye has the best prices and keeps up quickly on releases. rooted costs a bit more, but tom is super cool and often has things you can't find elsewhere.
i occasionally order from blackmarket, though the price is forbidding (recorded delivery).
certainly is best to order 3 or 4 at a tme postage-wise.

on a related topic... replace your old cartridges asap!

I'd say boomkat is reliable but for international orders its one of the most expensive sites I've ordered from.

it might not have as wide a range of dubstep, but an all round sick record store is www.dswat.net IMO - i always buy records from them if they have them over other online retailers cos they come fast as fuck (i had a package get from Bristol-norwich in less than 24 hours when i paid electronically and in less than 48 when i payed by CHECK!)

Thanks again for the responses (in this now ancient thread). Ended up ordering stuff from Boomkat, BM-Soho, and Redeye... went crazy and bought like 30 records or something, but now I got some nice stuff to mix...

Redeye definately seemed the cheapest, but everything arrived quick from all the sites in fine condition.

When I get my mixing skills up a bit, I'll post something up. Cheers. :P

Gotta give a quick plug to man like peverelist and Rooted records : http://www.rootedrecords.co.uk/catalog/

Tunes always turn up quickly, well wrapped up, and delivery is cheap too...

:-)
