How can you really find a good use for 808 kicks?

I never use 808 kicks because they sound like a pop and that's about it. If I compare them to an average kick from say the vengance or Thomas Penton series there's no way they can compare in terms of punch or depth.

Does anyone else find this? I don't understand how anyone can really make good use of a 808 bass drum. The tape saturated ones sound slightly better but they are too drawn out. Why are they widely praised??

I get the feeling you're producing on ipod headphones/laptop speakers.

A lot of the Thomas Penton and Venegeance were taken from 808s actually, and 909s of course.
The 808 is the source of kick and sub bass in countless tracks over the last 30 years.
Like 90% of jungle and dnb uses 808s as bass. The 808 kick is basically a sine wave. With some pitch amp and envelope you get the drum click sound.

The reason I said that is because 808 is 90% sub bass, if you are using a crappy output it'll sound crappy and weak, if you've got good bass output it'll sound bouncy and deep.

lol, all about opinion here. Personally I find the vengeance packs to be absolute rubbish. Thomas Penton on the other hand - top shelf.

It really depends on what your going for and what type of 808 sample your talking about. I assume your talking about the stereotypical gangsta rap 808 subbass "boom"...there are many samples that come from a drum machine. If an 808 boom is sounding bad to your ears, then it maybe the system your using doesn't have a low enough frequency response....also depends on how your mixing everything. Personally I wouldn't use an 808 sub boom as the main kick for a dnb tune...but again depends on what your going for. found this interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_TR-808

Try to broaden the rhythms in which a particular track of yours covers. If they aren't exactly your cup of tea but you'd still like to toss them in, perhaps you could create a bridge that contains 808 kicks and then bring back in the main choice of kicks you've chosen. Just get creative, there is always a use for 808 kicks.

Here are some example dubstep tracks that make the transition I've described.

:U: :U: :U:

Can't say enough good things about Goldbaby, the Tape808 pack is one of my go-to's.

808 use itself though is a bit of a divider...I didn't 'get' them for a few years of listening to techno influenced tracks, then suddenly one day it just made sense to me. You don't have to use any element...if you're having trouble finding a place for it in your mix (or indeed, your mind if you want to get existential about this production malarkey), then don't force it. Channel the energies you do feel onto elements that you enjoy, rather than trying to shoehorn in things you don't.
