Right, started off producing this year...

simply fruity loops, no midi keyboard, complete mousework, crappy speakers..

my 18th birthday is this week, and this is a real oppertunity to "floss out my pc" if you will

suggestions on what 2 start with

midi keyboard
speakers already come 2mind

but any other litle bits and pieces that could help me into something practical for a still beginner

Hmmm

Probably best spending about £100 or less on a keyboard and about £200+ on Speakers

Keyboard wise

anything by Novation

Speakers

there are loads of good deals on www.turnkey.co.uk personally i would go for the Tannoy Reveals with about £200 having had a good listen to them

What's your soundcard?

start with a midi keyboard.. in the beginning you wont work alot with it but after you produced some tracks youll notice you cant without somehow...

the monitor thing.. get some monitors like 600 pounds per monitor. then youll have sound. not with monitors of 200. Monitors are almost the basic so dont get a cheap set. just spend good on that kinda shit.

He has £200 not £1200?

You can get fairly decent monitors for that ok they wont be completely flat but if you understand the limitations of them you can get good results

dont mean to be rude but i would be hesitant about getting advice from someone who doesn't even know how to record vinyl onto his computer

Do you have any musical skills? Piano skills.......if you do......the midi controller will be a blessing........to be honest i rarely use mine...im not really musical tho i guess, like cant play melodic things easy...

i dont think it is ESSENTIAL to have a midi keyboard......

can you givus a example of what uve made so far?
you really dont want to spend a mint if ur just starting......

just use a hifi or summit.......buying stuff wont make u better.

spending 600 quid a monitor is stupid...unless ur minted obviously

id probably go with them tannoys aswell.

I seriously would just make do with whatever you have mate....

I think expensive monitors only come into proper effect when u actually understand exactly what ur doing with sound.

did any of that even make sense

actually, good option for budget monitoring is headphones.

Senheisser HD 212 Pro go down to 12Hz which is good for something like dubstep. They are not flat by pro monitoring standards, but they key is listening to shitloads of music on them (as many of us tend to do with headphones, at work, going for a walk, in the train etc) to the point where you just know what they are suposed to sound like. You will know when it's time to get descent monitors and sound card, because you will be good enough to know that its holding you back.

bollocks buy £20,000 Monitors it's the only way your music will sound good

I'd second the good headphones suggestion, though I'd recommend the HD-25s... And a good soundcard to go with those something like a firewire Echo Audiofire 2 or 4, you'll be getting enough quality out of those to actually hear your mix.

As far as a midi controller goes... I don't know, nowadays it's pretty much possible to use the computer keyboard for basic note input, so one could use that at first... Also any second hand old synth or something like that hooked up through midi should easily do the job. Wonder how much second hand midi controllers go for these days.

it does sound like he'd need to go about buying stuff in two or more batches though.
