I'm currently doing a weekly slot on radio station RWD.FM and am trying to find ways to make my show interesting and want to get hold of some exclusive dubs, would it be rude to ask a producer if he could send a few dubs over to play on my show or should i wait till i get successful enough to get sent dubs from people wanting me to play thier tunes? haha i'm just jealous of all the big djs with thier exclusive dubs :L

and if you wanna tune in it's every monday from 9-11pm GMT, playing all the latest deep, dark and minmal tunes :)

the best way to do this is to establish relationships with producers that you are feeling. Check the dubs section, scour soundcloud and make connections. push sounds you like from tomorrow's future artists imo

Just ask people tuning in to send their dubs to you and try to get on the good side with a few record labels.

i don't think anyone would be offended if you ask for tunes...just don't be disappointed if you don't get a response or tunes back.

Yeah you really just gotta ask. Maybe start off by buying/downloading stuff you like from soundcloud, then message the artist if you play their tracks. Do that a few times and they might start sending you unreleased shit. Browse these boards a little, there are plenty of good producers here who give their tunes away for free.

i'd be very happy if someone asked me for dubs
or do you mean just producers who've got releases under their belts, a name for themselves, etc.

I agree that building relationships helps, but my main tip would be to offer a reason for them to send them to you in the first place. For example, I play fairly dark sounding tunes, and a few people seem to tune in wherever I play, so I ask the sort of producers that stand to gain something from it (Roof Light, Ghostek, Svpreme Fiend, etc.) as well, so I can feel like I'm giving them something back, rather than just begging for tunes.

However, what have you got to lose by just asking for some? Explain a little about what you do, your unique points, and who knows, you might just hit the jackpot!

Maybe not hassle.......but asking politely has never hurt anybody.

If i ask someone nicely they will quite often give me a tune. If not, oh well.

Yeah if you find something you like.. send people a message saying how much you like it.. that you have this show and you'd love to play their tune on it.

Do the same for the record labels you are into - once you get a couple it will usually spread from there.

All about networking.

Yeah don't be intimidated, unless you're asking big names for tunes. Anyone not signed to a huge label will probably be more than happy to give you their tune.

Don't think I've sent too many dubs out, but my personal experience:

I'm not on a record label, not really hoping to be, so I'm kinda happy to send out stuff. As long as they're nice about everything and seem like a pretty cool guy or girl, why not?
May have a tune or two you'd be interested in.

it can only be rude if you make it rude..

just be polite about it, and ask the question, it's pretty simple, if they want you too push their sound, promote their music, they'll send some music, if they don't they won't.

good luck mate :W:

yeah I was in the same position a while ago when I started a show on Dubstep FM London, learnt that the main thing really is to make sure you dont just go "ez set me your tunes blud" but maybe just say you're loving their work and would really like a 320 of something cos you have this radio show you'd like to play it out on...

If its a relatively unknown producer (like me) they will most probably give it to you :) only times when it didnt work was when I started getting ambitious and started asking sleeper and compa for their dubs lool; but even then they still did reply with a polite rejection
