Can someone explain this to me? Hadn't heard of them before the whole 'Count To Potato' thing...just looks like another site that hosts 'funny' images and has users trying to outwhore themselves in terms of how many likes they get.

Am I missing something?

you pretty much have it there. some of it's funny, some not

its like ebaums world, meme base and to a lesser extent reddit
take (slightly) funny content from 4chan, watermark it, turn in to forced meme, run joke in to the ground

Never tried it, but most of my friends check it like every hour, they all have an app for it too.
I think meme's are the new funny youtube videos... and I actually never got into the funny videos thing either

Better than the raped 'so true' memes my friends flood my newsfeed with

as far as i know (i might be wrong), when videos get linked to off reddit you get hundreds of twats going "im from reddit, narwhals and bacon lolz!", and most other reddit users hated this as it made them look like stnuc and would cause your average 13 year old youtube user to start using reddit (even though reddit is essentially millions of 13 year old youtube users). to counter this people just pretend like they're from 9gag now so that everyone goes there instead of reddit, or they just flat out badmouth 9gag
the internet is serious business after all

they take 4chan and other sites OC and repost it watermarked and claim it as their own

I know loads of people who check this place on a daily basis, but I don't understand 99% of what's on it so I don't even bother.

The majority of them are (no offence) childish american humour.

i never catch on to these sites, i didn't even start using youtube til like 2010

fuck 9gag, imgur 4 lyf.

imgur was just a site made by a guy on reddit that didnt delete photos after they used too much bandwidth like other sites did before it was made (tinyeye and photobucket being the biggest culprits), crazy how it took off
