I've been getting into this quite a bit atm. cheesy as hell, melodic, house driven pop.

I've got a track I'm finishing today which is something I'm really happy with and I've spent a long time making sure everything works just right production wise.

Thing is what do you do this kind of music? I post it up on soundcloud and odds are it aint going to go down to well with people who have liked my other music. If I post it on facebook I'd imagine it would just get lost amongst everything else being spammed.

Have you had experience getting a singer involved or finding somewhere relevant to promote your stuff?

I've done a pop-ish record, though it was in Spanish not English.



If you're wanting to promo, I'd suggest a simple video (get a local art type college student involved), then put it on Facebook. If you've got a vocalist (advisable, pure instrumental hits are few & far between) get them in the video, then push it online.

get 20 or so REALLY good tunes together, completely finished with vocals, mixes, etc.

Then get out there and get known as a songwriter-- network, network, network. get in touch w/ folks at the closest ASCAP/BMI/SESAC offices and let them know you exist. If you're going to write pop, you need to find your place in the big music machine as a writer.

chances are they aren't interested in you as 'artist' who may explore more musical ways in an eclectic, versatile, creative fashion (does not matter what style..from the most underground tunes to the most cheesy pop productions what is really important is your 'touch'), but only interested in a dubstep machine, a reece sound designer.. a tool for djs... just produce what you want man, back in the days people like afx or fsol could produce cheesy, corny, melodic straightforward tracks, banger 4/4 club tunes as well forward thinking, creative, inventive, experimental, unique electronic masterpieces..

also the alias is not a good idea, with discogs index the entire concept and goals of aliases are profoundly changed now !

I've started doing some pop-ish type stuff with a female vocalist. I agree the hardest part is getting it to the right crowd. Not everyone who likes my other stuff is into it - but oh well. I'm definitely not creating a new alias for it - I just don't see the point if people will know it is me anyway.

One thing I do think is important is having a good video. If it is for a more pop-driven crowd, it needs to look slick and be well done.

Short of getting on a major playlist on radio, sharing videos is a big way pop-ish tracks blow up. It isn't guaranteed - but more likely than instantly popping up on Radio1's daytime heavy rotation. Like anything, to get noticed, in addition to having a good song, there needs to be a buzz. Having a good video can do that.

Oh - I almost forgot re: getting involved with vocalists.

Until now, most of the vocalists I worked with were hiphop mcs. Some I approached, others approached me about working together. With Lady Grew, she happened to be at one of my shows - we she sent me a note the next week or so. We got talking and decided we wanted to work together... we've done 2 songs already, but we actually hadn't met in person till last weekend when we played together at the release launch!


As Dave said - it is definitely important to network among the publishers and labels, but it is also important to network with other producers and vocalists. Don't expect anything right away, but let people get to know you and your music and (very important) your professional reliability. Then finding people to work with come quite organically.

been asked to do an Adele-esque artist, but i didn't want to and they didn't want to pay me enough

i was fortunate enough to make beats that got me involved with this guy

nothing came of it i still have the acapella but i couldn't remix it to my taste

i've worked on pop recordings and such, shit is fun, had people mashup my pop beats with pop tunes like this which i always loved

making pop the way i see it is making basic beats and such with the 2000hz range carved out for vocalists
