Where can I get vocals?

This has always stumped me in the music industry. I have tried to Google vocals but always come to these half ass web sites that have little or no vocals. Does anyone know where I can find legit vocals? Vocals that professional dubstep producers use? Thanks

What kind of vocals are you talking about exactly?
Are you looking for short vocal samples that you're going to use throughout the tune or do you mean actual vocals from a vocalist that will serve as the main part of the tune?

The former can be fairly easily acquired by yourself by just sampling a movie for instance, the latter, however, is a different story, I have no experience with this myself but I reckon you'd need to get in touch with a vocalist if you want it done properly and get something original.

I'm sure there's loads of possibilities though, just be creative.

Yeah, unfortunately there are not many handouts in music. A lot of those guys do it themselves, or have friends, or friends who have friends to record for them.

This has been asked like twice in the last week, go back a couple of pages. In fact just search this part of the forum for vocals and you will find gigs of them.

Also most of the vocals used aren't legit and essentially bootlegs, but no one really cares.

I literally search for old disco/funky/r&b songs on youtube, and then if i find ones i like do another youtube search for the acapella. Can usually find it as well. And i use vocals in most of my tracks, and youtube is yet to fail me.

I was about to say, vocal chords have been an extremely reliable source for me.

+1 for youtube. Loads of acapella's on there.

Also, some old pre 70's recording will be mixed really weirdly, with a lot lot of things hard panned. So if you pan them hard left or right in your DAW, resample, then re-centre, you usually find that you can cut out a lot of instruments and just be left with a vocal and some bleed, or the other way around.

Old Beatles records are mixed like that, just be sure they're not the remastered versions.

Also, some mixes will have just a kick and vocals dead centre, so mono the mix duplicate it, pan one hard left and one hard right & invert the phase on one of the tracks. You should be left with an instrumental version. Then, bring back the original track, mono that, and play it with the newly created mono instrumental (make sure they are exactly lined up together) and invert the phase on one of them again, and the you should be left with just an acapella! Well, in theory. Doesn't always work though.

Easier way of doing the above ^^ is if you have an instrumental version of a track, just load the original and instrumental into your DAW, invert the phase on one of them and the vocal should pop out nicely (if they're perfectly time aligned). Again, doesn't always work.

Google phase cancellation for more info.

ccmixter.org is a good place for creative commons samples, including a lot of vocals

I'll send you some vocals poorly recorded through my blackberry if you want to edit them Burial style.

For only £30 too.
