How good do you think professional would sound without...

How good do you guys think "star artist producers" (couldn't come up with a better "name", sorry) would sound without help mastering and mixing? Would it have a huge impact on e.g. David Guettas or Skrillex (sorry for picking Skrillex guys but I love him and his sound ) sound? I'm fairly interested how much credit they should receive for the sound they create. I do not question their skill at all, just interested in how much 3rd part is involved.

I'd also love to hear someone here who is a professional producer (not DJ) making glitchstep or anything fairly melodical before any 3rd part is involved. Like a sample or w/e.

dont quote me on this but i think skrillex mentioned he mixed and mastered his first tunes by himself so you can actually see how good he is without any help

david guetta is now 44 or sth i am pretty sure he gathered some knowledge along the way

all those guys have alot of skills. you cant deny that but i think they let their stuff master by the "best people" they can get for their purposes too

they're mixing their own stuff, and mastering isn't going to change a tune. half these guys do quick self masters or whatever before testing tracks out live and they go over well (you in the audience probably have no idea unless you've heard it in an interview or something). is a mastered track going to sound better than a non mastered track? sure probably. is it going to make a crap tune signable? no

I think the sound would be most of the way there anyway. A truly great sound comes from good starting samples. The mixdown is only to nudge sounds together a bit more that aren't quite gelling in the first place and the mastering is almost like a last ditch attempt to smooth out any overall issues in the mix.

Yes mixing and mastering do help to get that polished sound that we're so used to hearing but it's the sounds themselves, the arrangement and most of all the music that makes a great song.

my mate said he'd heard an addison groove tune before it had been mastered, said it sounded weak as anything. So I'd say it matters pretty equally.

Thing is all me's state that you should have the mix as good as you can get it before you send it off so i still think it does play a major part.Also i read a interview with some dnb producer(i forget who it was)they said about spor being one of the best mix engineers in the business and that how a real decent mix will help make the me's job a lot easier.They go hand in hand me thinks!!

I think it's fair to assume that for most of the big producers, mastering-as has been stated-is really just the last bit of polish. If you want to check songs out without proper mastering just listen to some vips.

Certainly doesn't add enough to make an excuse not to put in the work to get good at mixing. And also as outbound said, it's all in the sounds you start with. I spent a LOT of time picking out the right sounds on my last track, and by the time I got to the mixdown phase, there really wasn't a whole lot for me left to do. I think it's an awesome mindset to view mixing as the last small piece of glue instead of where your track goes from unlistenable to decent. Then mastering is just a matter of raising the overall volume/maybe a few small tweaks the ME has an ear for.

Since Guetta was mentioned, you should check out some of the actual credits for the music released under his name. You'd be surprised who is most likely doing the studio work in some of his hits. Also don't forget Jon Gooch/Spor etc work for deadmouse now, he is an amazing engineer. Do doubt helping the others on the label out.
