hey everyone,

I have been resorting to transient shapers lately to get a clicky top attack to layer for my kicks. Just wondering should I be concerned with adjusting the make up gain to match the levels before and after to effectively compare the result, just as I would with compression? Apologize for the stupid question, I confuse myself sometimes and these forums have been a great help in my learning process. BTW: I am using shaack audio transient shaper (not sure if all shapers have make up gain knobs but this one does, I'd recommend this plug as well)

lol schaack has a drive nob, i just turn the attack all the way up and then use the drive nob to bring the db level back to what it was, i never even touch the gain

^doesnt increasing the "drive" reduce the db and then you use the gain to makeup the loss? This is what i do and dont use the drive that much. Then again I dont usually have tha Atk all the way up either.

yeah bringing the attack all the way up increases the db a shit load, and then i use the drive to bring it back down
it makes kicks and snare sound way more punchy than just increasing the attack a little bit

One thing I would say, as good as the "drive" is on that Schaack, if you use it too much to compensate for the adjusted volume, it can really take away a lot of the "character" of the audio you're using, i.e, the kick will loose some weight. I would first try to see if lowing the gain and the adding some subtle distortion/compression later on in the chain to bring the fullness back up after the initial click

yeah but you can push it about half way (which is more than enough to bring the dbs back down) without hearing too much difference in the harmonics
