Hailing from Turkey, Ex Nihilo delivers low end and crippling frequencies with his latest release, the fifth release of Undersky Records, to be released on the 16th of July. The EP is made up of three tracks, each with its own character and flavour, amounting into what can be described purely as a sonic journey into the ‘Odium’ that pervades Ex Nihilo’s mind.
The title track, ‘Odium,’ prepares the listener with a stabby synth in the beginning and an offbeat hihat and snare pattern which keeps the shoulders bopping, while an ominous tirade of pads and whispering percussion surround the listener as if trying to enter into the soundscape by force, ready to unleash the upcoming odium.
‘Sleep of Reason,’ follows up with a chest pounding sub and louder, grainy percussion, as well as pervasive pads which deliver an atmosphere of discord and even disorientation. The subtle synth from the title track arises again and persists in the second half of the track, reminding the listener that they are still part of a musical journey and not just staple, barebones and standalone tracks.
To wrap up the EP, we have the final descent into the void, into the heart of Odium itself, the aptly named ‘Ghost Trance.’ The track is an onslaught of skeletal percussion, and tribal sub patterns, along with ghostly guttural vocals, and a wispy pad which serves as a drone, transforming the ‘Ghost Trance’ into what can be described as a funeral procession of the damned.
