Suggestions for my first set of speakers

I am looking to invest in my first sound system. I listen to many genres, but I have been particularly interested in dubstep. I want something that can handle very low frequency sounds but still function well with other genres. My budget is up to $800. What kind of setup should I be looking at? Any thoughts or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
So far I am leaning toward a 2.1 system with passive speakers. I do not foresee myself getting into the production aspect anytime soon so I want something that is pleasing for recreational use. I wouldn't mind going for used audio equipment but I am a little lost in where I should start looking. The system will be used in a 12 foot by 12 foot room. I have searched the forum for previous suggestions, but most have been made for studio monitors. Thanks in advance for any help.
