I'm interested in starting to make some animations/visuals as accompaniment to some songs I've just made...but have no idea where to start. What sort of programs would be best for taking images and then layering/animating them? I'm thinking it will be similar to photoshop, but with moving pictures. Haha, does that make any sense?

I'd say macromedia Flash, used it a few years ago, here's the first proper cartoon I made on it

Yeah flash or if you want to edit actual video probably final cut pro.
