What's wrong with this mixdown?

Post by GrooveThumper » Sun Jul 08, 2012 1:14 pm

Hey people :t: , I'm pretty new here in terms of activity. I've been researching and studying production techniques on this site and many others over the last year. So I like to think i'm decently informed at this point. I would love some opinions on the track I've been tweaking for the past weeks.

I've played the song out over club sized systems twice in the last week, and the mix just seems to be missing something.
That presence that fills the room, keeping the main sound right up close and personal in the mix.

Kick and snare are peaking at -10db
sub at -12db
midrange bass around -10db (those howls go slightly louder, but that's okay right cuz it's just for a moment??)
everything else as needed...
I'd like to say my mixdown (before master channel limiters) peaks at -3db, but it does push it on some transients. I can't seem to find that balance to keep it under -3db peak (for mastering headroom) and yet still have the main sounds really present. I heard the term used once "ahead of the mix"

I work in Ableton with Massive, Alchemy, & various other distortion plugins. I even resampled synths through an outboard tube preamp/comp/EQ. (ART Pro Channel/ it's decent, not pro, but I had it from years ago so I decided to experiment.) Reverb are on busses so all tones have a full dry version. Synths sent to the outboard tube unit come back mono, so those sounds are kept central while the dry signal is layered on the sides with it.
I was a big proponent with spreading the voices of massive synth with the pan position to gain sound width. but have i panned it too much??
All the pieces are there, but it's just lacking that extra mustered.

Seriously been tweaking this for a while, I need some actual feedback from this community, I've been taking so much silently...Here's what I've come up with what I've learned.

What am i doing wrong!?! >:(
is it a problem with mixdown, or even before that, with ignorant main synth voice spread? My brains boiled. :u: I need some criticism and opinions.

A lead instrument playing a melody/hook. It's those frequencies that are missing. What you've got is a rhythm section.

The main synth does follow a melody, it's pretty subtle but there is a note progression happening, but yea the whole thing is mainly percussive in nature. Breakdown steeze. :P

There's also a verbed out saw synth doing a melody line under the whole thing...i found it was clashing too much with this main wobble synth soo I mixed it low.
