How much does it cost to make a startup studio?

I recently got really into dubstep and progressive house, and use FL studio 10. I was just looking to what DAWs and other gear you guys would recommend for a start-up studio. Also I wanted to invest is some top quality headphones rather than monitors, what are your guys thoughts on that? Anyways, if you guys could give me a list of good start up gear and their prices.

From what I hear, you should be fine w/ FL10. Monitors are amazing (especially if you invest in a sub) but I think Beyer Dynamic make some fine cans (they have different models/prices - spend as much as possible on these if they are the only thing you'll be mixing with).

It all depends on how much you are willing to pay/can afford, mate!
On a low budget all you need is a computer, any DAW, and maybe some decent headphones.
On a bit higher budget,
FL10 is fine, get an interface, get some decent monitors, a smallish MIDI keyboard, maybe headphones for cross reference, room treatment.

Forego room treatment, such a non necessity.
Should be able to get it going for a couple grand though easy.
600 or so for a custom PC
300 for monitors
100 for a cheap midi keyboard
1000 for software (Daw+komplete)
NIs actually having a half off sale on everything now too.

This is true in the beginning stages. But once you start learning how to mix down really well, and your tracks are becoming more well put-together, you should invest in some small room treatment. It helps out a ton.

while room treatment is all well and good, think about how many guys make all their music on the road whether it's in a tour bus or an airplane or a hotel. non necessity at any stage, but if you can afford it, go for it

Like the person said above Beyerdynamic's are nice. I bought the DT 880 Pro headphones recently. Before I used AKG K 44's, and they hurt my ears. My new headphones are comfortable. Sound nice so far as well.

& OP - if you like fl10 stick with it, great daw. i'm no pro on headphones but anything these guys suggest will do great. besides those two things any 25 key midi keyboard will do. akai and m audio make nice ones for about or a little less than $150, but there are plenty more out there. that's really all you need to start.

Yeah i'd go for a keystudio or an Oxygen keyboard if you want some knobs. Both under 100 and both will get the job done. I've been using my keystudio for years...has a really nice feel to play on.

I really do recommend against headphones. I think they are close to essential, but like, further down the line. My 770's are HELLUV bass heavy, versus krk g2 rokit' 5's with a 10in sub. That sub can cause blunt force trauma, but just in terms of balance, in room monitoring versus headphones is really really different. Totally babbling, bros, just saying.

I think a keyboard isn't essential. I don't use one, but I play piano and I've produced music since 2010. Sure it might be useful but surely not essential in comparison.

That's why this list is spot on, it is in descending order of importance.
Comp, daw, interface, monitors, keyboard, headphones, room treatment.

wisdom.
try a lot of daw demos and pick the one you like the most, you may also pick a nice soft synth but most of the daws come with good ones.

All you really need is a fast computer, good monitors and a decent DAW.
About 3 thousand should get you going!
Depending on what you already have.

A good soundcard will also improve your sound quality alot comparing to built in soundcards and comes with more in/outputs, ASIO driver for the small keyboard etc

Close. if there are few problems with the room then you can get by without acoustic treatment otherwise I would go with a decent pair of headphones above monitors any day

If you have musician friends, etc. hit them up for demo versions of DAWs that they don't need/use. Having a copy/license of the demo version often gives you a discount on the full version.
