I've searched for a thread similar to this, but haven't come up with one.
How much music theory do you use to make tunes?
I mean, chord progressions, sticking to keys, cadences...that kind of thing.
I'm relatively new to electronic music and I was wondering about how music theory and dubstep are connected.

I dunno if it's still true, but back in the day, people used to say that everything had to be in minor key.

you can use as little or as much music theory as you want. im pretty sure some popular dubstep producers know absolutely no music theory at all, and their music reflects it. some people are very well versed in music theory and make beautiful music. some people even tune their drums to match the key of their song.

usually EDM come in a formatted format , you dont have much room for that kind of in depth theory , you can use chord progression and ... thats it , you dont need much more

I just make sure im in scale when i make a melody. Thats about it lol.

shit usually sounds better to me when I end phrases (4 or 8 bars usually) on a cadence. That said, I was listening to some deadmau5 last night and he didn't use more than 3 or 4 notes in the entire track...sooo....depends on what you're going for. me, i love a good melody. If I can't hum it, it sucks IMO.
