I am buying some fabfilter plugins using an educational discount which also basically allows you to make your own discounted bundles (in addition to the 50% discount).
I was planning on getting their EQ, Compressor, Gate, and Distortion plugins, but their limiter plugin also caught my eye. So here's the deal, I haven't gotten technical with my mixing and mastering yet, just sound design and song arrangement, ect. I have never touched a limiter, I have an idea what it does, but not how I would ever use it. The thing is, if I bought it now, with all these other plugins, I would save alot on it. All the other stuff would cost around $256 total, and I could add the limiter for $60 (buying it alone I would pay $114).
So that being said, is a good limiter something I might find really useful in the future once I mix and shoddy self master my tracks in the future? I just have no idea if I would find myself using it. What do you think?

I think it may be the best limiter out, better than the eq, comp, gate and distortion plugs. Honestly, go for it. You will use the shit out of it. Not just for self mastering, matey, any and all peak control.

depends on what you're using now for a limiter

Right now I am using nothing for a limiter, unless ableton has a stock one. Call me a noob but I have never even thought about using one lol. Haven't ever gotten into a heavy mix/eq phase yet in any of my tunes though.

Ableton does have a stock one... you must be new to production if you've never used the limiter. I wouldn't recommend spending lots of money early on because once you get more experience you can pinpoint exactly what you need for software.

Pro-L is great. Looks good, sounds good. I don't have it myself, but I know people who do and they can't praise it highly enough.
I don't use this one really, but I have a friend who swears by it. It is supposed to be an exact clone of the Waves L1 limiter. This review actually reckons that it does: http://redfaux.typepad.com/the_redfaux_ ... clone.html

I can't imagine it would make that much of a difference but then again I've never used it.

All of the Fabfilter plugins are top notch, you won't go wrong by using them. They haven't made a bad plugin yet and the ones they have made stand out from the crowd. I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

That's true, but this isn't really a lot of money... It's a good deal, so I would pick them up if I were you. Keep in mind though that the included effects in Live are quite good and you can stick to those if you want. Also, you can always sell the Fabfilter plugins. You will need to sell the entire bundle though, not just one plugin.

Pro-L and Pro-Q are my favorite fabfilter plugins..
i make my mix peak at -6 db, then i load Pro-L and set it for +8db, and i'm pretty happy with the result
