How do I DMZ - Haunted Dub style basslines?

now making these might be a bit of a secret, I don't know, but this style of basslines is something I'd really really like to get on with experimenting with and use, but I really do not have the slightest clue on how to get this kind of soft round sounding bass. Is it made by modulating a sample, is it built up from a sine, is it clever synthesizes? Anyone got a clue?

It sound almost like those "ugly" waves you get from looping something very narrowly, but they usually sound much sharper.

Roots.

CHOOOOOOOOOONN!!

My guess is a square wave, with the Lowpass filter envelope set to make one "wob" each time the note is triggered, and then sometimes the bass has some other subtle wobble which could be an lfo with low volume also operating on the bassline. But essentially lowpassed square.

Man im glad im not the only person who is infected by this very sound :D
I tried to kinda rebuild this Haunted / coki style wub in one of my earlier tracks.
Its not the real thing, but maybe i can help you
Example:
Soundcloud

This has to be the most annoying bassline in dubstep history...

I figured out a square wave is nice but i couldnt get it to fill my needs. I used a square in operator and modulated it with a sine till i got a very light, glassy sound, lfo lp da shit you know, then i duplicated the track and set the second one an octave higher.
Im not really shure about that, but i think there was also a phaser envolved :D
Also a bit of reverb.

cheerz

Sounds like if you took the classic grime/bassline LFO squarewave bass and crossbred it with coki's bass.

Certainly has that metallic FM sound of a coki bass but a lot smoother (probs a lower cutoff point for a LPF)

it sounds like the filter doesn't open enough with this bassline? Maybe that would get closer to the sound?

I think this was the closest i could get, because with a higher cutoff it started to sound harsh. but i dont really remember its almost a year ago.
But thats the funny thing about this sound it is rich and full but has a very smooth tone.
I'll give it a try as soon as i am back home, i could imagine there are some nasty waveforms in Dune which fit these kind of sound really well.

I think Coki generally work with some form of FM synthesis? Always got this sort of metallic sound to it, so might be an idea to work with an FM-tone with a fair bit of overtones but not enough to get it really sharp. Also, I think the filter modulation is acting a bit funny, like, it opens and closes in a way that sounds more like filter envelopes than filter lfos.

I don't have an FM synth though, do you guys know any decent free ones? I use Ableton but I don't have Operator.

Yeah the filter really is acting funny in a way that it opens up, closes and does a short opening at the end of an 8 note.
FMMS looks sick man, thanx for that.
