Not calling anyone out in particular on this forum, more so public racism being downplayed. There will always be a certain population who is ignorantly racist. But seems the lack of ethnic diversity in European sports seems to be breeding a certain amount.t of tolerance towards racism.

We have plenty of racists here no doubt but the last sports figure I can remember making racist comments was a baseball player who in turn was blacklisted from the sport and never played again.

Just wanting some honest insight and opinions on the matter

casual racism (or casual racists).... pretty good way to describe NZ tbh.

UK is probably one of the least casually racist places in Europe and that's not saying a great deal. Italy on the other hand....

If we're to be serious better to define our terms, yeah? What is a racist? Is it the belief that certain races of people share and exhibit different abilities? If so the Olympics has only made me more racist. Heads up: black people run fast and Asian peoplez make good acrobats.

I think it is prevalent in all sports.
Just because you don't hear about it and only 1 guy gets banned, does not mean it isn't happening everyday, all day.

Casual Racism seems like an oxymoron. and in terms of lack of ethnic diversity in sports, i dont watch football but im pretty sure many of the players are foreign.

don't see how casual racism is worse in europe than in the us tbh... not saying its better here, there are stnuc everywhere

but i mean racism was pretty much institutional up until the 60's (at least in some states), surely this has bred prejudiced mentalities that are much more vivid if anything

Any sports you're talking about in particular? Because I'm going to admit that I don't watch alot of things other than football, and to call casual racism in footy these days would be a bit crazy.

Europe's an ironically big and multi-peopled place to be generalising about racism.

Tbh the only place ive seen racism first hand is at the football. The players might be diverse but the crowd certainly is not.

yeah it's pretty difficult to generalise across everywhere in europe as well as across all sports. for instance, in my snooker watching days i don't think i saw a single black player. apparently this guy is the only one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rory_McLeo ... er_player) very different story in football, which despite the staggering amount of racism is very ethnically diverse in that respect.

That's less to do with the sport and more to do with the culture behind it though...most snooker players have come up through working mens clubs in the midlands/north and large cities, which typically aren't places where black people go.

well yeah that is my point, different sports are different socially and culturally, and a lot of the time you can't really separate that from the sport itself. you could say a lot of sports like horsey ones (lol), rowing etc are very class- or geographically specific or require a lot of investment to do. football is actually rather the exception in that it doesn't require any infrastructure or capital to get good at, and can be accessed independently of where you live (for instance the chances of you spending a lot of time with horses is much lower if you live in the inner city than if you live in the countryside).

obviously none of this implies racism in itself, although as dead rats points out racism in a particular social sphere might play its part in segregating people out from it (and the question of class is a different story imo), but it does reflect and raise questions about how race and culture affects what path in life we are likely to take

Lack of ethnic diversity in european sports? Can you explain what your referring to by this? I agree about your point about 'ignorant' racists though. A lot of these people have no grasp on the fact that Britain wouldnt be where it is now if we hadnt encouraged immigration from the ex-soviet states in the post war years. They have no concept that highly skilled immigrants from Asia have contributed much more to the economy than they could ever hope to. And all that crap you hear about "them taking our jobs", nine times out of ten it comes from uneducated twats who lack any sort of work ethic and are totally unemployable anyway. It would be fucking laughable if it wasnt so disgusting /rant.
