how do you approach new genres?

ok i started on a tune for the pokecomp (mr mime) and it went straight into some deep groove houseesc 4/4 tune never listened to much house etc but def want to keep it that way
what would be the best way to do this like just use your own "knowledge" and try to make it sound good without deeper knowledge of the genre or trying to find out as much as possible about the genre you approach?

Why wouldn't you want to get into house? It's that one genre I play when there's
people who are afraid of techno.

I'd definitely do some research, or at least listening. Podcasts.

just like many edm producers say: always be open and listen to all kinds of music. sticking to just one genre exclusively doesn't exactly broaden your horizon if you know what i mean.

so my tip is: listen to the latest house tracks on beatport or similar sites to get a feel for the genre. from a production standpoint it's usually a very similar approach with all kinds of electronic music. it only differs in samples/sounds used and a few convention when it comes to arrangements of the track.

Yeah guetta stuffs not house anyway... maybe some bastardized subgenre I guess, but doesn't remind me at all of like Marshall Jefferson, Frankie Knuckles, Romanthony, Sneak, Cajmere (Green velvet), Inner City (Saunderson) etc. I'd check those artists out for house inspiration.

But that said, I'd also say maybe don't listen to it at all! Just make what comes out, or better yet listen to some music that inspired house like late 70s disco, funk n jazz music.

thanks man had a short listen to the names for now
the basslines are definitly something i am after the vocals on the other hand could be a bit more tricky to pull off though
(maybe i try to go apeshit and let microsoft sam sing about mr mime)

hearing your mentions i remebered the tune that maybe inspired me to go that way haha

found it by accident

Haha yeah the house forum is a much better bet than beatport tops.
Anyway, yeah those guys I listed did a lot of vocal house but there's also more instrumental kind. It was usually just the vocal tunes that were huge hits of course.

That Backroom tune reminded me of this classic:

You should write for your heart, not for any other reason. If your hearts not in a genre enough to immerse yourself in it and respect your history, KEEP WALKING, dont ruin it for some guy who truly loves it, because god knows, you wouldnt want him shitting all over your niche either.

true man
i never make a tune i am not 100 percent into its just that i mostlikely wont make many more house techno tunes after that
and i am definitly not into it for commercial reasons its a compilation nearly just for fun but still i want to make it as good as i can

Thought you meant like deep house and stuff. Guetta is closer to skrillex than to the average deep house track.

There are some american definitions where:

Everything = Techno
Techno with vocals = house

But they are ridiculous. Like wormcode said, Frankie Knuckles n stuff. But there also a lot of modern day equivalents.

Knuckles, Negro, Pooley, Tonka, Ben Watt, Shapeshifters, Hott 22, Falke, Axwell...

IDK, I can hardly think of house as being techno with vocals. Impossible for me.

I sometimes get a bit shy approaching a genre that I don't know. I usually wait til theyre a bit drunk and then make my move.
