Alright guys & gals how?
No seriously, I've been on this 'Glitch' phase for about 2 months now, but I'm not quite sure on how to get the structure & glitch quite right.
Here's a couple of my inspirations
I kind of know how to do this already, but I can't get the structure and glitch quite right.
Anyway I really want to get into this a lot more.
I know I could just strap a beat repeat on my piano, drums, and sine's, but I want to mix it up as well.
It's just the structure of the 'glitch' isn't quite working out.
Also in another thread we were discussing this guy http://soundcloud.com/xnz-1
I want more detailed explanations on how to get such a sound, if possible.

huge alvo noto fan here. check out the stuff by snd and mark fell as well (mark fell is one half of snd). multistability is a ridiculous album.
as for making this stuff. reaktor, max/msp. or just create standard beats in your DAW but do all the glitch edits by hand. don't just stick a beat repeating plugin on a track. this sort of music is intricate.

I was pretty obsessed with glitched out stuff 10 years ago or so. It kind of turned into a parody of itself these days with stuff like Glitch mob and everyone throwing glitch plugin crap on the master and going mental with it, but when done well it's extremely cool. Look into databending, open random non-audio files in audio editors, circuit bending, break stuff... pour some water in some cheap electronics and record the outcome etc. But most of all, avoid glitch plugins like the plague. Just make good use of envelopes, pitching, quantize, and zoom into audio really tight and go to work with the scissors tool!

i have to partly disagree, IL grossbeat can be really really nice on some parts.
dblue glitch is a joke though.

Glad to see there's some glitch lovers and alva noto appreciators here!
@samurai Yeah I will check those out asap! I love the concepts he has developed and his art. Been looking at MaxMsp & VVVV for the past 2 hours since someone said that's what alva uses for his visual performances.(his live show is unreal) Forsure man, thanks for the tips
@wormcode I agree! People are really quick to say, "oh this isn't glitch, it's just noise." I'm not a huge fan of noise, i'm a fan of the precision and art of keeping a structure in a glitch setting.(if that makes any sense) So pretty much record, anything, everything and experiment, right?
@hasezwei yeah, i've played with dblue and I was not having it! It's way too random for my liking.
keep the tips coming btw!

Get into granular synthesis as well. If you can get a copy of computer music, it includes Cumulus from www.Loomer.co.uk it's pretty nifty. It was made for the magazine though, they don't even acknowledge it on their website, though they make other good software. Also look into some old trackers. I think they excel at glitchy noises due to how you program them.

Ok, collected some glitch tips via the SEARCH FUNCTION which I'll compile here out of habit;
Check out GlitchHopForum, their production section is a goldmine.
You can still edit the drums if you want - a 4/8 bar drum audio clip is still drums...if I want to make any micro edits to the arrangement, I just get out the cutting too and get slicing. A lot of my tracks' glitch percussion effects come from me doing that, going at it with an 8bar perc loop, moving bits around, repeating, swapping over, reversing etc etc.
wub wrote:Now exactly what you're after, but in terms of glitch hop drum programming I use this technique;
Glitch Drum Loops
Say you've got a 4 bar drum loop. Bounce it out. Now, stretch it so that's at 200%. Bounce. Now 400%. Bounce again. Now 50%, again bounce.
Now reverse it.
Do the same thing in terms of stretching the reversed tune, bouncing out each time.
Load all the clips into your audio editing window and chop the shit out of them. Make crazy fucked up glitch patterns into 4 bar loops.

dbGlitch is a really powerful tool IMO...it's just that people whack it on the default Random patch, think it sounds shit, and then don't take the time to sit and learn how to program the thing. You've got wet/dry controls for each effect, different pattern banks, the ability to crossfade between the effects, programming on individual hits for certain sounds...if it's programmed effectively you can get some really creative interesting shit out of it.

Yeah it does have some programming options, but it still retains its sound and character which you can usually pick out. This is not a problem for most people though, it's just a production nerd thing. Might as well mention iZotope Stutter Edit is on sale right now for half price which is $149US. In my opinion though that's still way too much money for that when there's countless free options...

follow this. and search stuff like 'RAW data audio' and shit like that
heres a bit i made using raw data and audacity. i selected bit thats sounded good in audacity, and exported them into ableton. the only added bits are the sub bass, the kick drum and some reverb. all the rest are converted file from my laptop
Edit: download for full effect. soundclouds compression will cut off the high frequencies and make it sound like shit

@grooki isn't it?
@goodah holy shit man, that sounded so dope! Cheers for the link as well! I have audacity, but never really found myself having to use it often! I will definitely be watching that cheers dude

thanks and no problems
i must add that a lot of music from Alva noto, Ryoji Ikeda etc is that the music often has a very strong visual side to it. you should listen to it through a vectorscope. I use the one (wave candy) included in the image line effects bundle.
Heres an example of Cyclo ( a collab between the two)
^yeah after doing plenty research, I found out some free design tools like pure data, and vvvv that could help me out!
Now it's time to learn visual art as well and soon i'll be on my way to my local art fair haha:p I'll be checking out wave candy!
cheers dude
