When u dig for records...

Post by dickman69 » Fri Aug 24, 2012 3:22 am

Do you have a list in ur phone or something that u update all the time, or do u remember in your head things u want to find?

I like to listen to stuff online or w/e and add it to a big list so it stays fresh, then I can check around for them
(but im looking mostly for disco/soul records all the time)
every Tuesday 11pm EST on http://cosmicsound.club

Putting it in your phone is so old school. I just write the tunes down on a piece of paper these days.

i only dig for samples, not for listening. so besides albums and artists im familiar with, i just look at the date and instruments/musicians involved, and to a lesser extent the label and album cover. if i recognize any musicians or producers (usually just jazz and soul respectively) or if i see something cool like a harp or a lute or old synths i'll pick it up.

I do the same thing w/ the date when looking for samples, w/ jazz tho im usually looking for particular artists but will sometimes just blind buy... And in reference to the label ill pretty much pick up anything motown or budda/curtdom unless its like after 1980

Yeah this is one way I've gotten loads of cool stuff. Otherwise I just remember people's names. There was a lot of session musicians back then, seems like more than today's music so I remember a lot of drummers or singers or producers names. I also sometimes take a portable USB turntable into shops and listen. Sometimes people stare but I've never had someone tell me no. As a last resort I'll type stuff into my phone and search online, but usually if I can't find a damn thing about the record online it gives me that much more incentive to buy it haha.

no one who listens to dubstep digs for records, its only been around 6 years lol

when i go vinyl exchange in town though, i usually pick a style or section that sounds interesting, look for names i may recognise, listen to them n see if i like what they do, or alternatively, pick a loada stuff i've never heard of and listen through that.

anything i like from then is artist and/or label searches to see what else i like

I usually just look for labels/artists/producers I like. Any time I see one of these it gets snapped up!

Digging for samples I go or labels, artists, years and producers. Either that or take a random dip in the bargain bin. Interesting and abstract front covers can sometime yield good results. For general records to play out, I just go to the record shop and see whats in that sounds good, every now and then do a massive online shop.

the order of things to remember differs from genre to genre.

sometimes it's looking at the year, sometimes at the producer, sometimes the label, and to a different extent the shout out (Fabio, Grooverider, Moving Shadow, etcetera getting shouts on records that don't ring a bell at all otherwise has turned out good before)

if the above don't work it's probably guessing and randomly getting some extra records to check out at home 8)

I do also do this (who dosn't), But part of vinyl for me is the culture. I love going to the record shop, speaking to other dj's etc, physically looking through crates and finding gems you wern't aware of.

I like going to the record shop too, but I fear speaking to other dj's most of the time.
Maybe it's better at actually good record shops, I don't know.

i very rarely actually dig for records which is a bit of a shame really

i mainly buy new stuff online now that i'm not near idle hands record shop, and older stuff is usually discogs. i find most used records are massively overpriced if the shop has any idea about the music, but ocassionaly you find a shop where they don't care/know and you can get massive bargains

A bookshop in my hometown has just opened up their basement and are stocking vinyl. I picked this up on a complete whim/off chance for a £1 'cos it was in the Garage section and pretty old, couldn't listen to it in advance, got home and find there's one selling for £150 on Discogs.
