Anders Behring Breivik is sane and gets 21yrs

A Norwegian court has found that mass killer Anders Behring Breivik is sane and sentenced him to 21 years in jail.
Breivik admitted killing 77 people and wounding more than 240 others when he bombed central Oslo and then opened fire at an island youth camp last year.
He insisted he was sane and refused to plead guilty, seeking to justify his attacks by saying they were necessary to stop the "Islamisation" of Norway.
Prosecutors had called for him to be considered insane.
The five judges were unanimous in ruling that Breivik was sane.
He was convicted of terrorism and premeditated murder, and given the maximum sentence of 21 years' imprisonment.
So that's a little over 3 months for each person he killed.

Im guessing 21 years is the maximum sentence under Norwegian law, not much can be done about that.
Ridiculous to think he'll still have a large chunk of his life left when he's released though..

I'm guessing he won't be able to just go home after the 21 years.
Also, if he's still viewed as a danger to society they can prolongue the sentence by 5 year each time.
If anything he wants to be seen as the biggest danger to (multi cultural) society.

fucked up, but what do you do with a person like this? breivik himself would have hated to be sent to an asylum: "During the trial he said that being sent to an insane asylum would be the worst thing that could happen to him and accused Norwegian authorities of trying to cast him as sick to deflate his political views." so maybe if this had been the sentence then i'd be happier personally, but ultimately it doesn't matter what we think, just still feel so so much humility for those kids he murdered and their families, how have they reacted, how do they view the sentence?

There's a better chance of getting murdered in prison than in an asylum though.

Exactly. Plus, a completely sane person in an asylum doesn't work anyway.

And as much as he'd be little loss I doubt I'd want him murdered by other prisoners.

I hope he gets an extended sentence, the guy should never be allowed to see daylight again. They should make him live in a dark room where he has to shit in the corner and the only liquid he gets is when a guard walking by pisses into a funnel that leads directly into his mouth.
Mad respect for the dignity of the Norwegian people tho. Here in the UK we could never stay that classy.

giving him special treatment, like a stupidly long or indefinite sentence, wouldn't seem to me to be upholding the rule of law. that's the law they have so that's what he's got. their crime and recidivism rates are not really such that there is real reason to criticise the functioning of that law.

maybe if we gave it ago, like not advocating universally condemned and illegal torture, the UK'd have a better chance

That just sounds like judge dredd. Laws are not set up with men who kill 77 kids in mind

Yeah agree with this Mark Chapman got refused bail yesterday 31 years for killing John Lennon and another 2 before he's eligible for parole again. Seems pretty harsh to me.

they should attempt to ingratiate him in the general population and rehabilitate him.
thats what civilised societies do with criminals

You talking about Chapman E_H? You're right if so but he's getting a significantly longer sentence than most people get for a single killing. It's not like it's consistent within the same jurisdiction.

I agree.
They should at the very least be consistent.
Seems weird that just because he killed someone famous he should get more time.
