Looking To Get a Mixer
I am looking into getting a Mixer, for when I play live, but I had a few questions concerning what to get.. First off, I know what a mixer does, and for what purpose I need it for, so don't flame me, for my under knowledgeable questions.. (Okay, well I think I understand the purpose of one.. It's for routing multiple signals through the mixers inputs, to carry sound across, and distribute it to the master channel?)
I was looking on SweetWater, and saw they had Analog, and Digital Mixer, as well as powered.. I presume Analog means RCA, or any analog connection, and digital means USB? I also presume powered, has phantom power, so you can use a condenser mic mic? I did however see line mixers, but idk what those even are O__O...
My situation is like this.. I am going to be playing live, in a few weeks time, and I need a mixing console to fulfill my needs... I currently own an Akai MPK Mini, and an Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, so the audio, and midi functions are taken care of, but I still need a mixer, to mix the live sound, and EQ the levels, adequately, so it sounds good..
My budget is $300 max for a mixer... I don't need a top of the line one, just something that will work...
Thanks,
- SMOR3S

Re: Looking To Get a Mixer
Unless you are planning to use audio from your laptop, use your MPK mini as a midi controller to control the pitch, playing, cueing your tracks etc and use an external mixer (you would need a new soundcard for this as the 2i2 only has one output and you would need two) I would recommend buying a midi controller like this - http://www.numark.com/product/mixtrackpro/ or If you are on ableton maybe something like the APC
I would recommend getting whatever you are going to use asap as if you haven't played live before you are going to need to practise

Re: Looking To Get a Mixer
I have a mixer I'm looking to sell. Let me know if the Yamaha AW16G looks any interesting to you.
Re: Looking To Get a Mixer
what are you using to play out? vdj, traktor and serato or just sequencing clips and live performing each track in ableton? you don't need an external mixer to use any of those, although it would be ideal. If you are doing a live PA on Ableton, a smart midi mapping of the lpk should fulfill your needs, but you won't be able to mix any tracks without touching the laptop keyboard and mouse. if you are using a digital dj software, I'm pretty sure you can easily find a keyboard mapping and a mpk mapping on DJTT, but it would be impossible to cue your tracks as you only have one audio out.
I may not be a performer nor a dj (still working my live set out), but I've got a few hours on playing live in bands and I learned one thing out of it: don't do it if you don't have the slightly idea of what to do.
take your time, learn stuff, figure out things, perfect your skills.
one more thing: quit that attitude. dubstepforum has a shit ton of valuable info if you take your time to dig through threads and is and was browsed by some serious heads from every scene from every place. it takes time to earn respect on this board, specially when you produce commercial music, but if you can get through it without bitching about it every time someones troll the shit out of your thread, you will see that this forum can be a really good way to network online with other heads and a vault of valuable info.
ps: fuck grammar, it's 3:00 am and I'm watching he-man.
big up man

I haven't decided if I am going to play the track through Traktor or Ableton, cause I have both..
Re: Looking To Get a Mixer
I'd say your best bet would be to launch clips with ableton and applying fxs, making transitions, mashing up stuff rather than djing them in traktor. Beatmatching and cueing would be terrible if not impossible I guess.

How do I do mashup repeat stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blR-7v_hC6EHircine wrote:I'd say your best bet would be to launch clips with ableton and applying fxs, making transitions, mashing up stuff rather than djing them in traktor. Re: Looking To Get a Mixer
beat repeat on the vocal track, on/off mapped to a pad, time values mapped to knobs, pretty simple. google, ableton forum and djtechtools articles are your friends for this kind of thing.

Re: Looking To Get a Mixer
i would advise holding off on the gigs until you're sure of how to perform how you want. booking sets before you've even decided how they're going to work probably isn't going to end well...

Your use of "aye" seems really off to me btw
Re: Looking To Get a Mixer
Could we get back on topic please :3
/) Thank you...
So the questions is, do I need a mixer or not, cause if I can, I'll just hook my laptop, to my scarlett, to their sound system..

Re: Looking To Get a Mixer
Can you define what you mean by 'playing live' first...are you doing a live set of your own tunes via a performance DAW, using a virtual DJing program etc?
