Big 'verb kicks

Post by Misanthr0py » Wed Sep 05, 2012 9:15 pm

Hi guys :t: Been ghosting on this forum for nearly a year and can usually find everything I need by searching for it, but alas, I had to make an account and ask for your guys help...

Anyway, how do you guys go about doing them and making them full and thick? When I try to make them I just throw Lives native reverb on a kick, make it fully wet, fuck with some knobs ( ;-) ), turn the decay time up to like 15secs, Maybe compress a bit, but it just seems lifeless.

Any good alternative reverb plugs?

Cheers

Use reverb and compression (NY) as send effects? Also don't reverb the low end of the kick, it'll get muddy.

I don't know why I never thought of that, I guess I only ever used sends for adding slight amounts of an effect, cheers...

Oh, and how about some other reverb plugs?

too much effect and the reverb muddies up the initial transient IMO. the best thing to probably do is sidechain the reverb subtly to the kick so the initial 'kick' cuts through but you still get the reverb tail. or have quite a long predelay but i think sidechaining is better.

and use it on a send

and if you do have it on an insert don't make lives reverb 100% wet cause you won't get much if any of the original sound coming through

Check out Voxengo OldSkoolVerb and Ambience from Magnus, EQ the reverb too, OldSkoolVerb has built in EQ.
I also agree with the posts above.

I generally don't stray far from lives reverb tbh, I just find it easy to use
I had epicverb on my old system and it was pretty decent, forgot about it when it formated ( ) Thanks mate

reverbed kicks? what, like this?

edit: i've used adverb for that kind of sound. it creates a pretty wide stereo field so you'll have to keep that in mind and compensate, sounds ace tho

I generally just use a send. I have my go to reverb for that, which atm is the convolution reverb in FL. Turn the Dry signal off and the wet to about 50%. This allows me to keep the kick sounding how I want it but also give it some nice space if I feel it needs it. I tend to use this same send for pretty much all my drum channels. Makes everything sound like it's all coming from the same space even though I tend to pull samples from all over the place for just one small drum loop.

why wouldnt you put reverb on the lowend of a kick if it sounds good?

nearly every techno tune released in the last 2 years is based solely on that technique (for better or worse)

that's a classic right there. 909 drenched in reverb (i heard that this was recorded at a studio mainly used for classical music that had some crazy plate reverbs, but that's just hearsay afaik)

You can if you want, but it leaves less room for other bass. In that kind of techno the bassline is usually made up from the kick and reverb anyway. If you find a good balance though you can have both, that's where the EQ and parallel processing can come in handy. Most of the techno has the reverb separate from the tracks I hear, otherwise the kick wouldn't have much impact.
