i shall remind you that people tend to forget one thing when they're producing: electronic dance music is usually very repetitive. you can easily build a good track around one idea, loop, sample or what ever.. just add little variations ie: more drums, less drums, different drums, percussions, another melody or pad or whatever. remember that if it sounds good for 8 bars, it will sound good for another 32 bars just switch up at times.. elaborate on how your favourite tunes are built. try to recreate those sounds or build a knockoff from your favourite tune then switch things up a bit so it becomes yours.. steal a catchy chord progression of a random tune.. etc etc

i wish i knew someone to share ideas and songs with in person but it seems like the only people that i can find that are into making electronic music or electronic music in general are all online.

Take a look at the collab thread for ways to get in touch with other producers

ya i posted my info on that like a month ago hoping it would draw some people in but nothing .. i think im looking in the right place? i posted my daw of choice , inspiration , fav synths etc, and no body ever hits me up .... seriously i have been searching the internet and this forum all day everyday for the past two years (been on this site for less) im just tired of reading the same things everyday. i really wish i had someone to colab with not a teacher but someone to just chill with and talk about production etc (Production lingo) i try to talk to my ol' lady about stuff but she dont give a fuck about what i do as far as my music goes .. no one i know does and its frustrating trading thoughts and production tips with myself and my music journal (thats almost full) :u: . i post music on youtube... at least i got some old tracks on it but i rarely get views and when i do they dont leave comments. So its like every song i make its my ears only. i dont know if im progressing or getting better i dont know if im heading the right direction and i dont know what my next move should be. sorry for writing a book ... just venting (doesnt happen often) any ideas ....anybody?

Maybe try reaching out to people? Go through and find people that make a similar style

Sounds like we're maybe kind of in the same rut.

But I don't care too much. It's just something I poke around with for a few hours at a time, usually string together a few days or a couple weekends and then forget about it for a month or two, come back, rinse, repeat.

That's what people did to me :)

Collabing is interesting. Just started my first one with someone on the list. There's a lotta things you gotta make sure of so that everything works out.

lol I read about 17 hours a day on my free days/ watch a tutorial every bits of free time and make tunes for about 5 hours straight when I get a sparked idea.

In the mean time, clubs, school and other shit.

Don't see how you're going to be able to collab if you don't even bother to get on the net other than your phone. The only way that will even remotely work is by using skydrive or drop box.

Also...

You basically send your format to the person and all your vsts that you might have used along with the sound files, so when it loads up the songs won't have any trouble loading. It's a pain to get started usually but once you're started it can be really fun. You can always teamviewer it but that's laggy and sometimes the sound quality can be rough for the other side. Just depends on how you want to go about it. I live in SF but I like to make a lotta stuff all across the board collabing doesn't come easy for me usually as it's hard to find people with the time. I also like to make my own synth's and use a lot of off-the wall things. It's an online thing

but I'm only 3 months in now, so don't take my word for it.

Time man. I put loads of time in it. Because I have the time to provide I just go for it.
There really is no right or wrong, it's just how much you really want to make that music, get that sound and have someone go "Woah that's cool!"
. How much bias you throw away and how much you really actually enjoy the process of learning.
It's the same as anything, you read and learn and practice and experiment constantly. Get better and better and make it part of your life...
There's a million artists out there, but only some will really push themselves to the full extent.

Fuck it, I'll compare it to something most of us know.. Like a videogame. We mindlessly play it hours on end everyday as kids, all of a sudden it's like "WOAH he sooo good!"

The only difference is that music is art which has no limitations other than the knowledge we've simply learned because there is no physical limitations thrown into it (Well other than how you can move your mouse)

Could go into theories and shit but what's the point..

KISS! (keep it simple stupid)

Im producing for half a year now and got some tunes on soundcloud, but for me the most difficult thing is actually getting your ideas and samples together as one big blend. I think when you have a good idea for a song, the process of making it will go automaticly step by step.

For your issue in the lenght of the song, you should listen to other people's work (like Distance, Icicle, Vivek) and listen to how they built up their songs. They usually start with a good pad and sometimes some vocal samples. Anyway thats all I know, just search tutorials and learn from it DONT copy it. Try to learn more and take time to find your own sound.
