That was truly awesome. Great interviewer, interviewing one of my biggest inspirations about one of my favorite musicians...!

now THIS is something i will never understand. vinyl only, limited run, no repress,... fair enough. but why releasing a tune exclusively just in one country?

I think it's because Japan has higher royalty amounts so artists like to give them exclusives as a thankyou. Not sure if i just made that up or heard it from a legit source though

It happens all the time, across all genres. Must be something about it online.

So from what I've researched, the Japanese bonus tracks are to encourage people in japan to buy locally rather than import the album from abroad which is cheaper.

true, even in japan itself, japan versions are more expensive and released later (2-3 weeks or so) than international ones. they often have more extensive booklets too, with lyrics sheets or interviews added.

Def Leppard had this on their website ages ago
For economic reasons, it is common to add one or more bonus tracks to Japanese releases, in order to avoid Japanese retailers trying to sell the import releases. Retailers can get import releases for a lower price, so they can make more money if they actually sell these for the regular sales price. Fans are more interested in the Japanese releases, which have more tracks, so they will not be more interested in the imports. If the import releases would sell more than the Japanese releases, it could cause a catastrophe for the Japanese economy. Most bands use this strategy in Japan.
The European/UK release of "X" did get two extra tracks for different reason: to 'make up' for the fact that the band plays in North America way more than in Europe.
