UK based producer Om Unit is not one to be caught up in the cycle of trends. That much is clear from the first five seconds of opening track Ulysses from new EP Aeolian, his third release for the Civil Music imprint. In the past he has been a champion of the marmite genre that is electro on his 12” The Timps as well as a producer for Foreign Beggars as DJ 2Tall, and here he chooses to form a concoction of squiggly and shuddering tracks from the increasingly bloated corner of post-garage. As such, he has built a sound that, whilst not immediately pleasurable to the ears, is unquestionably, for better or worse, ‘the Om Unit sound’.
In an age where there reigns a sense of one-up-manship amidst an arms race to find and then pigeon hole the beat of tomorrow, it is refreshing to find a producer who is willing to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.
