Esther Rantzen, the founder of ChildLine, said she now felt a degree of guilt for ignoring “gossip” that surrounded the Top of the Pops and Jim’ll Fix It presenter.

At least five women have spoken to ITV1, claiming they were molested - and in one case raped - by the late entertainer, one of the biggest BBC stars of the 1970s and 1980s.

Some of the alleged incidents are said to have taken place at BBC Television Centre.

Rantzen, who began presenting That’s Life in 1973, told ITV1: “I feel that we in television in his world in some way colluded with him as a child abuser - because I now believe that’s what he was.

“We all blocked our ears to the gossip. There was gossip, there were rumours.”

She described it as “very distressing” to conclude that Savile abused teenage girls, and said those in television had helped turn him into “a sort of God-like figure”.

ITV1 is broadcasting an hour-long documentary about the star, called Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile, on Wednesday night.

Sue Thompson, who was a newsroom assistant at BBC Leeds, claims she walked in on Jimmy Saville one day in 1978, when a 14-year-old girl was sitting on his lap.

“He had his left arm up her skirt and he was kissing her,” he said.

However, she kept quiet because she did not think anyone would believe her.

Some of the women who have spoken to ITV1 said they met him while living at a Home Office Approved School for girls, called Duncroft, in Surrey.

One claimed she was raped at the age of 14 by the star in his dressing room at BBC Television Centre in 1974, the first of “dozens” of incidents.

She said: “As a mature woman now, I look back and I think I was actually raped on that first occasion.”

Another said he had sex with her “on a number of occasions” when she was 15, while others have claimed he rewarded them with cigarettes and tickets to his shows if they performed sex acts on him in his car.

Late last year the BBC decided to drop a Newsnight item investigating allegations of sexual abuse by Savile, who died last October aged 84, leading to accusations the piece was 'killed' to spare the Corporation's reputation. Instead, two tribute programmes celebrating his BBC career were aired.

However, a BBC spokesman said no evidence of any allegations of misconduct had ever been found in its files, so it was “simply not possible for the Corporation to take any further action”.

Peter Rippon, editor of Newsnight, said: "It is absolutely untrue that the Newsnight investigation was dropped for anything other than editorial reasons.

“We have been very clear from the start that the piece was not broadcast because the story we were pursuing could not be substantiated.”

Roger Foster, Savile’s nephew, said his family was “disgusted and disappointed” at the allegations.

“I just think it's very, very sad you can say these things after someone's died and the law says you can't defend yourself when you're dead,” he said.

In today’s Times story about the allegations surrounding Jimmy Savile, David Sanderson highlighted some quotes from As It Happens, Savile’s 1974 autobiography, that nobody else seems to have picked up on. It’s strange that they haven’t, because they are startling:

[Savile] writes of an incident at the Mecca Locarno ballroom in Leeds, where he worked as a DJ during the 1950s, when a female police officer came in with a photograph of “an attractive girl who had run away from a remand home”.

Savile writes: “‘Ah,’ says I all serious, ‘if she comes in I’ll bring her back tomorrow but I’ll keep her all night first as my reward’.” He then writes that the girl did go into the club and “agreed that I hand her over if she could stay at the dance, [and] come home with me”. He wrote that he did then hand her over to the “lady of the law…[who] was dissuaded from bringing charges against me by her colleagues, for it was well known that were I to go I would probably take half the station with me”.
