IT major looks grim... :?

(I'm shooting for Computer Science.)

When calling any form of customer support (not just IT), you have a higher chance of reaching India, South Africa, or China, than the U.S.

Capitalism at work my friend.
It's also the reason some of the richest american business people who live/work abroad on companies that operate out of the states revoke their citizenship, it's all to dodge taxes and make more money.
There is no incentive to have these jobs contained to the states, when there is no penalty or incentives not to outsource.

I thought they made strict laws to try and prevent this kind of stuff? (outsourcing)

Its the same as a lot of manufacturing jobs

most of the stuff we buy is made in some far away country where the workers get paid fuck all for working stupid long hours. Thats Capitalism.

Sometimes its children making the stuff.

Now its the call-centre type jobs...

Exactly. Firmly believe capitalism is responsible for most of today's problems.

Outsourcing isn't a 'problem'. It gives jobs to countries with often a far poorer population (poor people need jobs too you know) and to top it all off. Cheaper products = more people can affoird them. Unless you're an elitist who only thinks rich people should have stuff.

The spoiled, raised with a silver spoon, know nothing 'west' pushed anti-child labor laws onto Bangladesh in the '90s.

You know what happened to all those kids who were working in factories for a tiny ass wage? They either got into prostitution or died of starvation.

I know it's really easy to tell countries with FUCK ALL how they should model their society, you having been raised in one of the most propserous places on Earth in the HISTORY of civilization. But out there, that is opportunity. And you know how we got where we are today? Through being a developing country, exactly like that, as little as 150 years ago. In fact, the reason we don't HAVE child labor these days is because of a degree of free enterprise that allowed parents to accumulate enough wealth to be able to send their kids to school. The child labor laws were secondary to it. Cuz we wouldn't have been able to pull it off if the wealth and resources weren't there (see Bangladesh.. or Cambodia.. it was either of those).

I'm not saying that these conditions are good. But they're better than worse. And if I was a kid, I'd rather work and get paid than starve or sell my body. And yes, out there those ARE the only other options.

Weren't you the guy who thought that lots of diamonds would fix the economy?

Gene's right, outsourcing in and of itself isn't necessarily a problem. He'll probably disagree with me on this next part, but the problem is free trade agreements like NAFTA that fuck local businesses over and allow companies to destroy our environment even more.

NAFTA ain't about "free trade". It's about globalization and extending corporate and government power over a larger area, with more workers, consumers and resources to control through legislation.

Just like the EU is about as "free trade" as the USSR.

Yes and no. I'm not a big fan of outsourcing because I'm a big fan of in-country (or at least in region) support, particularly for high priority customers...nothing worse than having to direct Mr Massive Pharm Company to India because he needs to log an issue.

That being said (and with my Dilbert hat firmly wedged on here) outsourcing is just ridiculous in terms of cost savings. In my team, for the salary of one person based in Switzerland, I've got four people based in Mumbai. The business case for budget is a no brainer.

Yeah, this too.

Had the options of doing CS/Programming, and my Dad (who at the time was deep into a 30yr stint at a global IT company) advised me off of it for exactly that reason.
