I have been trying to find out what synthesizer was used for basslines in a lot of old speed garage / bassline house tunes. i have also heard it in hard house and old happy hardcore. it has a specific sound

I've heard it might be a roland juno-106

I dont know much about hardware, but i think that is probably heavily detuned square waves with a filter envelope assigned and some chorus or something like that, id imagine you can get very similar results using soft synths.
Edit: P.s Im not a synth expert.

yeah, i know how to make the basic sound, but trying to find out what the synthesizer was. i've looked around and looks like it was probably a preset on the yamaha dx7 or dx100 or something, the basses sound a bit similar to the 'donk' sound which was made using a yamaha dx7

low passed detuned square waves with a bit of chorus, feedback and distortion. Someone here once said that it was a Korg Triton preset called feedback lead, something like that.

they do sound similar to a donk actually. funny the widdler uses a donk in one of his songs i think prehistoric something or other. and in his q&a thread someone asked how he made the donk. he actually replied "lol a friend made that for me because i couldn't seem to make a decent sounding donk for the life of me."

i just thought id bring that up. but yeah i quite like the sound, im gonna have a play with it later.

I'm pretty sure that's what it is for the first 2. The 3rd, I'm not so sure.

Source: I have a 106 & I'm old (the 106 was almost the standard analog synth for any producer back in the Speed Garage days).
I also owned a DX100 and can say that it's not from that.Or, at least, it's not a standard sound on the DX. Back in those days FM was really frowned upon... all people wanted was analog subtractive synths. FM was considered a relic of the 80's.

I really can't weigh in on this at all as my knowledge is minimal it seems compared to others. But, I do get very similar sounds using square waves and modulating an opening filter and the resonance of the filter. I know the word "donk" has been used to describe the sound, but to me I think of more like when a water drop hits still water, and the sound it makes when the surrounding water/splash water, sets back into the rest.

just sharing :)
