A DJ competition, with a difference...

Wasn't really sure which forum to put this in, so if it's in the wrong one, feel free to move it...

Up n coming DJs! Fed up of shitty ‘vote for me’ popularity contests masquerading as DJ competitions? Fed up of seeing brown nosing wasters clang their way to victory in so many other comps? If so, Below The Belt has the solution. A blind mix competition, purely judged on DJ skills. How can you be sure it’s unbiased? Simple. DJs enter by turning up to our event on Friday 16th November @ H Bar, Hove with a mix, with NO DETAILS ON IT, BAR A CONTACT PHONE NUMBER (in capitals, because so many people overlook it), and put it in the “Mix Box” on the bar downstairs. This way, mixes are anonymous, and the best DJ is the winner. Yes, it’s that simple.

RULES:

1. The styles that we are looking for are – Garage (old and new), dubstep (all styles), UK bass, grime, drum n bass (all styles), house (all styles), breaks, Detroit techno, electro, UK funky, bashment, moombahton, juke/footwork, trap, hip hop, and anything inbetween. No psy trance. This ain’t a dogs on strings ting.

2. Entries must only have a contact phone number on them, nothing else. Entries with any additional info on will not be listened to so as to eliminate any possible bias.

3. The mix must be 30 minutes or more.

4. Ableton DJs welcome, so long as you’re doing next level shit. Doing a line of ket off your laptop before putting on a pre-synced tech house mix is not our definition of next level shit.

5. Judges will be the Below The Belt team.

6. The judges’ decision is final!

PRIZE:
The winner will win a paid set at the next Below The Belt event (which will be under a new name), and your mix will be passed on to our Brighton and Hove promoter friends, gaining you other potential slots. Which ones will vary depending on who wins/what style they play. You will also win +2 on the guestlist at the night you’re playing at, and a £50 bar tab. Y’know, cos we’re nice like that.

Would love to hear your mixes, although tbh, it's just open to people who turn up on the night, as with links, you know who did it, which adds bias. Plus, international DJs might get a bit pissed off when the 'paid set' doesn't cover flights from the other side of the world. We're only a small night right now... :i:

Cheers. All about giving people with DJ skills a break, rather than whoever has the biggest friends list...

I think djs like jackmaster, oneman and Ben UFO have finally ridden the fact that to have to produce to make money as a dj.
I can mix better than 90% of these producers who play out, they just drop dubplate after dubplate and of course people love it (including me) because at the end of the day, it's all about the music (marco carola quote) and most people don't care how tunes are mixed.

But there's something unique when two tunes get blended together perfectly (Especially when two vocal samples marry together) or when there's a tight 2 min mix when the basslines are exchanged with each other to make some kind of super tune.

I think there's room for both kinds of artists on these line ups so big up for putting this on. Hope it works out.

Ahhhhhhhhh. Im not that far from Brighton, but not close enough to pop down to drop a CD off. Would have been all over this like a dirty sex rash.

I agree. There are some producers who, whilst having sick selections, aren't really that interesting as DJs (naming no names). Equally, there are some DJs who can't produce for shit but will absolutely smash it every set. But they often won't get as many bookings as the big producers. Hopefully we can help balance this out... :)

Damn shame. Have you seen the prize though? A paid set, a decent chance of a break in the Brighton scene, AND £50 worth of booze. Could even be worth a trip from Croydon. Oh yeah, and we've got turntablist legend DJ Blakey (of 1Xtra/DMC fame) playing on the night...

Yeah. VIVEK's playing at Volks that night, a few of us are going down there afterwards. Only a short taxi ride away...
