I've been looking to get better at mixing recently and I was hoping you guys could help me out with that. Could anyone export stems for a track that may already be complete or is close but take all the effects off or all the EQ compressions etc. Then you could send me the stems, I could mix them and send the song back and you or post it in here and you/others could critique my mixdown. Let me know if you are interested.

I think this is a great idea - there was a dub reggae song I recall seeing stems for in the last year but honestly wouldn't know where to begin to look for it.

But srsly a good education for all.

tbh Id trust officialDAPT. He's been around for time and is a fairly active member of the community. He wouldn't be trying to scam someone out of a tune because he wouldn't risk utterly killing his rep here.

It sounds to me like a genuine request for mixing practice and I see nothin wrong with it myself.

If I had any tunes ready I'd send you the stems. You should on theother hand, check out sites like this. They do remix comps all the time, sometimes you get stems for a whole tune, check out the archives, perfect for mixing practice.

I'd be insterested in this. I have a song that I really can't be bothered mixing down, it's a good song but I just got too much else on the go atm.

And about stealing peoples songs, I don't do that and never will. Can't get any lower that that. There's really no way to make sure though so I can see where you guys are coming from.

I'll upload the stems to megaupload/mediafire then (I forget which one got taken down?). Did you want to do Absolutely all the mixing? Like kick/snares EQ and compression n stuff aswell? Or just the levels?

Why not a mixing competition - where everyone gets the same stems and put some basic restraints on how wacky you can get with DSP... ?

In fact, it'd be really cool if it could be done in tandem with another contest here - like the winner of another one gets their song mixed, and then they get a free set of mixdowns of their tune to choose from while everyone else benefits from the learnin'...

I really think contests like this contribute to the educational value of the Production forum - doing instead of talking about doing. Community stuff.

I like the idea alphacat, but to be totally honest I'm more interested in a mock client mix environment. Wherein you get stems (whether they are dry or not being up to that individual client), you get particular requests/instructions, you get a reference track, you have a deadline, you get the rough mix done, the client reviews the track and gets 2 revisions/recalls, and you send him back finals with different edits.

I was thinking about this too. Since I don't plan on being a mix engineer like you, I'd be more interested in EQing drums and compressing them to fit in a mix, which is what I would do on my own track.

On a side note, I think I'd rather have those who are sending me stems leaving the spacial effects like reverb on though I think because those effects kind of tell me where you want them to sit in the mix and they definitely affect the vibe of the track.
