I really fucking HATE when people say "he makes dubstep beats" or whatever the genre discussed is.
It absolutely makes me itch when people say that. It just sounds so....degrading when someone says "oh, you make dubstep beats?"

Mainly this one half-assed rapper I know every piece of music without his shit rap over it just a mere "_____ beat" in his eyes.


So, what are some other misconceptions that people ignorantly/rudely say about music that grinds your gears?

I hate when people think its a simple thing creating songs/beats and more. Its complicated. And takes a lot of work. Some people really cant appreciate that "{

Wow... I use FL and it took me a good 15 minutes to figure out what DAW you were talking about...

People who call all electronic music dubstep bother me. But not too much as when they say "there's no difference it's all random noises thrown together". I understand some of the synths are funny sounding, but seriously. People degrade electronic music as if every thing is done for you automatically.

ive found that:

people who arent interested in making music think its easier than it is, and dont respect how much work goes into it.

people who ARE interested in producing think its harder than it is and convince themeselves its impossible before they even start. i know more than 4 who bought FL over the years, tried for a week or so and gave up.

i kinda want to start to try and learn to make music but i'm 1 of them people you mentioned above. i seem to have it in my head that it will be too hard and even if i managed to make a tune it would be crap. i know i should at least try, but like a few of my mates are well known producers and i have watched 1 of em a couple of times and i didn't get it and just thought fuck this. i mean looking at a tune making program for the first time is like trying to work out a foreign language.
thinking about it tho it would even be an achievement making a shit tune then i spose ya have something to work with and get better. if i ever managed to make a tune like say quest deep inside or kromestar j 5ive try harder i would be ecstatic with pure joy.

That’s with anything.

For instance, learning to work Photoshop / Illustrator / InDesign in takes time, but that should not translate to “Graphic Design Is Too Hard!” You have to learn the tools.

I always tell people starting out (though they never listen) learning the DAW will be a learning curve. That’s just how it is--but don’t kill your desire to make music itself because of this necessity.

This too! Especially the second part. I have a friend who I'm sort of teaching (more like mentoring) how to use FL studio. Whenever I'm sitting at home he always messages me asking for help, and when I make an example project file for him he complains about how hard it looks and how he feels he'll never produce something worth listening to. It's getting annoying because I always have to repeat, 'things like music require imagination and you have to believe in yourself. It's been said millions of times, you have to want to do it for the love and passion of music.'

One misconception: that you need to show off by over-producing everything... loads of tracks sound like they got made so they can say `listen to how perfectly I EQ`d that snare` etc. Loads of `90s jungle had rough edges and was all the better for it! People think they have to throw the kitchen sink on stuff

- If you aren't a musician you cant be a (good) producer
- If you aren't an expert in synthesis you cant be a good producer
- Being a good producer = massive success
- Being released is the best thing possible for a producer
- Tunes are made by DJs
- You can do it wrong (how can you fail at self expression?)

i got my first setup at 15 before i had ever gone to a rave or anything, i was just listening to mix cds and odd mp3s. when i put everything together i realized i wasn't going to be able to create music on these things.

i remember buying my first 12" thinking "i'm going to remix this"
