Looking for quintessential dub tracks.
I've been guiding a friend through various electronic genres. He is down with dubstep, but wants a more direct understanding of the dub influence. I can't help him here, since I have very little familiarity with dub.
Could anyone help me illustrate the sound? Maybe try to encompass it in a handful of tracks? It doesn't have to be encyclopaedic; just give him a sense of what dub is.
Thanks.

Yeah, I saw that link immediately after I posted this thread, but I don't know if that's going to help. I don't want to sift through 24 pages of YouTube videos trying to find tracks which are specifically dub.

Re: Looking for quintessential dub tracks.
Here yah go mate. My favs of dub
Re: Looking for quintessential dub tracks.
I'm not a huge dub person but when I am feeling that sound the track that comes on first every time is King Tubby- Washroom Skank, my favourite dub tune
Re: Looking for quintessential dub tracks.
Scientist and King Tubby are my favourite dub artists.
Artists in the Dubstep scene such as DMZ and Kromestar are also worth a mention.
Congo Natty and Benny Page are also some good influences to look at, specializing in the dub drum n bass / jungle scene.
Looking into Dub is a good start, however looking into ska, reggae, and the origination of the 'soundsystem' will take you a step further, and it would also be wise to look into garage, minimal techno, drum n bass/jungle and even electronic music such as kraftwerk or yellow light orchestra, to see how how we really got here.
All of this may seem irrelevant, but this forum wouldn't exist without most of these tracks.

A few awesome tracks in the French Dub style:
Re: Looking for quintessential dub tracks.
For a basic understanding get the King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown album, it's an absolute classic and probably my favourite dub record of all time. There's too much old dub to mention really, this is a good compilation to introduce you to the sound http://www.amazon.co.uk/Trojan-Presents ... B004WDPXDA
For more modern dub check labels like sip-a-cup, ZamZam sounds, Tuff Scout, Necessary Mayhem and artists like Vibronics, Da Grynch, Vibration Lab, Disrupt.
This mix is sick, big up Alpha Steppa!
