really diggin this new kind of music. lots of their stuff is around 80-95 bpm and also some stuff at 140. what i'm interested is the music theory techniques they are using. the chords they are using are perfect for the synths/ vocal samples. how are they arranging these vocal loops so perfectly??? any tips for this style of production?

I remember when Flume was a nobody haha. Funnily enough, I'm wearing his shirt right now. But yeah, interesting question, maybe someone can give their two cents.

Most of XXYYXX's stuff contains vocals that are repitched absurdly - most of them are probably repitched to the key of the song he's making or repitched to a low/high enough pitch so that it technically doesn't sound out of key. As for chops, it's just about playing with the samples till something fits the groove of your drums or synths. His synths and basses are usually really simple - fuzzy leads, "warm" basses and the occassional arp. One of his tracks is literally a sub line, arp and a vocal that pans from right to left consistently - it's not technically great but it sounds okay because the arp and vocal chops panning make it sound consistently different.

I'll be on Youtube listening to Tycho (who make all his intricate tunes with analog synths and the like) and see XXYYXX videos in the "recommended" which is all boring sampled shit

I mean he seems like a nice guy and I'm happy for him, I just don't get the hype.

It's hardly groundbreaking stuff, but it's done well. Not vibing the tune TBH though, I agree with some of the comments re; it being quite generic. Still it's a formula and one that has been executed well enough.

I like it precisely because it's so simple but still hit or miss with his stuff.
His mixes also have tons of space, Its like a pallet cleanse when i want something nice and simple.


Anywho, yeah production side again plenty of space in the mixes.
Gives more room for the reverb/delay to breathe.


I dig this one a lot after it progresses a bit and in the context of the album.

I ended up buying XXYYXX's album for $1 on Bandcamp. I liked the tune Good Enough. He was 16. I think his stuff might be considered future garage / post-dubstep.

I think part of his popularity is that he's one of the better artists on Bandcamp aka The Land of the Blind.

EDIT: Here's the tune. The guy was actually a scrub himself.

I actually really like XXYYXX's stuff, his songs aren't groundbreaking or technically amazing - just properly done and that's what makes them good. His songs basically seem to all use 808 kits so download a bunch of 808 samples, the vocal chopping is mainly just experimentation/playing around with to get something nice. His synths are also really simple, just play around with squares, saw's and triangle waves, add some vibrato and some reverb

thanks for the advice everyone. i know a lotta people are gonna hate xxyyxx but i do think his chords are pretty dope. check out my song if you wanna. kinda inspired by this genre... enjoy.....

I was nasty back then. It's chillwave.

I would find chords that work with the vocal by trial and error.

There's only reverb on the vocal, not even the pad, I think (maybe a little) which might give it that space.
