How do you promote your tunes?

Post by Shock Rx » Wed Nov 21, 2012 1:17 pm

What is the best way to get your tracks heard? Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but the search bar did not answer my question. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Youtube is quite good, there are plenty of promotional channels who promote artists with quite a small fan base. Also letting people use your songs for their videos is also a good way of promotion.

I wouldn't say I've got a 'fanbase' but I am quietly proud of my 3k+ plays on soundcloud. I've never tried to actively promote my tunes bar putting one in my sig on here (allthough I've not done that in far too long either.)

This is purely my opinion of course but I wouldn't try and actively try and promote your music unless you feel like you're ready to take it to a professional level. The trick I've found is to just focus yourself on other peoples music, show an interest in what people with similar tastes are doing with sound. Use soundcloud, now don't spam it, but give honest thoughts and praises about stuff, also get involved in the wips thread on here, get yourself into a few collabs with other people, share their music with your friends if it's a sound you know they'll like and hope your collab budies will do something similar.

Being immersed in a musical comunity will generate natural exposure, as your footprint becomes bigger, your stuff will get out to more people, then of course it's down to your base line tallent. If you make really good music, more people will gravitate towards it. Some things you can't force and have to accept your place in the scheme of things.

This.

I've gained nearly 1k plays on one of my sig tracks, aside from being in my sig here and some occasional promo on my twitter (to my meager 150ish followers) I haven't done much else.

Also, I did get Zane Lowe to check out my SoundCloud simply on a one off tweet to him - mentioned I apparently have some decent stuff. I find Twitter can work quite well at contact DJ's and artists - as long as your not like "PLS LISTEN TO THIS NEW TRACK OMGPLS K THXBAI"

I find it way too much effort to promote stuff besides putting stuff in my sig here. Besides I can't handle criticism or rejection so i never send stuff to djs or labels anymore..

Tbh i just can't get my head round those people who spam soundcloud, fill every song with ridiculous tags and generally just be annoying. Even if you get a modicum of success from it surely you'd just feel so pathetic and false to make it not worthwhile? Or is that just me?

I don't a lot, but if I do it's by promoters on Youtube or sometimes posts on Reddit. Promoters on Youtube are super helpful and usually friendly towards lesser artists--trust me, they help a lot. And I posted one song on Reddit, and BAM suddenly 600 plays.

Also, remixing other artists you're friendly with helps. Then you promote it and they promote it. Though I wouldn't listen to me too much, as I'm honestly not good enough to take advice from yet. :P

I cant judge that since i only listened to a half of one of your tunes since you posted, but promotion is a whole different game from actual production and you seem to do it alright^^

The most success I've had in this field is with sending stuff out to djs etc, got me airplay on Radio 1 and DJ support from Jakwob, I also got my first release sorted from sending demos out. Big names in the scene are surprisingly approachable in terms of being sent new stuff, one of the reasons i like this scene so much, even the big fish always have time for the little guys

Nobody has mentioned anything about playing live shows?

Do gigs, put your stuff on CDRs and pass 'em out, tell people about your facebook, etc., etc..

I'd also recommend (your own) Youtube, I've got something like 28k plays and thus far I've hardly promoted it.

Soundcloud can be good but it's mostly other producers who want exposure as well so a lot of the time it's just pointless comments/etc to try and get you to check out their page. I don't think I've gotten any genuine fans because of Soundcloud. New producer friends, definitely, but not normal fans who ended up liking me on FB, etc.. most of the people find me via YouTube.

Get your producer buds together and make a free compilation.

Also do your best to engage your fan base, if someone leaves you a comment make sure to reply, etc.

There's gotta be a million online articles written on the subject as well, make sure to google it if you've got time.
