After years and years ive think ive finaly got that superhard hiiting snare your hearing in all those glitch-hop tracks ala koan sound, culprate....Feel free to use
Step 1: find 5 or soo 808/909 snare samples. You want the ones with pfffff sound thats similar to white noise.
Step 2: tune all the snares so there hitting at the same freuquency, somewhere imbetwwen 200 to 300 hz.
Step 3: sidechain all of these into a new track in the mixer.
Step 4: solo one snare and EQ everything out exept for where it hitting, then boost this fruequency.
Step 5: compress the shit out of it, this is what starts to give it the hard hitting feel.
Step 6: repeat steps 3-4 on two more snares.
Step 7: With the other 2 snares EQ them up where there hitting and leave the tops on.
Step 8: compress your two new snares (if you have a multiband compresser make it harder on the tops).
Step 9: in the track they're all sidechained to add another compressor.
Step 10: tweek to taste then render to wav to save cpu
Hope i helped

a mate of mine recorded himself tapping the microphone on his mac and used that as a snare and it sounded sick, dont always reach for the samples kids, make your own samples

do both, of course.
on another note, being able to distinguish the different parts/layers of a sound is what really makes producing drums easy. when you master layering almost any drum samples will sound really good.
also, people always forget to saturate -> lowpass their drums. i really love doing this with snares and hats, pops through the mix just as well as without the processing - but isn't as harsh. good to do for low-fi vibes too.

thats why dubstep became boring, everyone is doing snare less tracks with a fuck ton of percussion elements.

On this video t at 4:33 he says transpose the tom sample to 200Hz "because everyone talks about the magic 200Hz". Meh!!!
It's not 100% perfect but oh well think it sounds similar.
Thanks for the videos wub.
I understood something I always missed.
These MF need compression and compression and more compression if not it sound weak if too much it sound shit.
The hard part is to know when it sounds shit.

For the amount of processing and layering that goes into most of these snares, they sound pretty bland
